...the Arizona Firebirds just destroyed the Trombley Braves in the first game of the championship series by, get this, 23-4. And it could have been far worse, as the Firebirds stopped running to hold it down. Another amazing aspect is that the Firebirds lost to this same team, 4-3, two nights ago on a wild pitch in the bottom of the seventh.

Now the Firebirds have to play Trombley again -- as in right now -- for the championship. It will be interesting to see if they have a total mental letdown or if the Braves have no confidence left. AZ has its best pitcher going in Sammy Solis, who just arrived back from the Area Code Games.

Trombley, a very powerful team and organization, was in a similar situation last year when they dropped back to back games to the East Cobb Yankees to finish second in this event.

Arizona Firebirds defeat Trombley Braves 10-0 in the second game tonight to win the Connie Mack World Series! Tonight, they outscored a great Trombley team 33-4 in the two games combined. They set a World Series record for runs scored in the series and were one hit shy of the record.

Sammy Solis pitched a shutout in the second game.

Great congratulations go to John Aguirre and Ron Forbes, together the heart and soul of the organization from the beginning 18 years ago, and to field coach Doyle Wilson, of Chandler Gilbert Community College. They are all greatly deserving of this accomplishment along with a team of truly talented players, nearly all of whom will go on to big time Division I programs or professional baseball.

Jason Jarvis of the Firebirds was selected the Most Valuable Player. He originally signed to play with the University of San Diego, but could get a substantial offer now from the Los Angeles Angels, who drafted him in June, or decide to go play at Chandler Gilbert for a year and then perhaps sign with the Angels or reenter the draft.

Some of the other award winners for the Firebirds tonight were pitcher Sammy Solis (just a junior), third baseman Raul Torrez (Arizona State University), left fielder Seth Furmanek (University of Portland), second baseman Riccio Torrez (a sophomore), catcher Dominick Piazza (Chandler-Gilbert)), and center fielder Khris Davis (Cal State Fullerton).

Again, congratulations to all these great young players and to their coaches who did an amazing job putting it all together and with great support from so many coaches and baseball people back in Arizona.
