"IMHO, there's nothing like great defense. Those boys have got what it takes!"

I sent the video to a local scout. He said he knows their instructor and in his opinion the kids were being taught the wrong way. In my opinion they looked very advanced for 10-13 years old. The only flaw I noticed was that they ran with their gloves extended sometimes and some people don't like backhand flips.

Is that the Ozzie Smith Shortstop Academy?

Looks like they are having fun.

When the game is fun and played for fun, players are relaxed and loose.

Scouts and coaches would call this Hot Dogging and frown on it (that is until the kid ranges to make a play with the same movement).

I always tell kids to practice the great play. Lay on the ground and then come up throwing accurately.

Now that's fun.
Really can't understand the negative comments by anyone seeing the video. I think it is great that these boys have a coach who actually has drills for their defensive work ... like outfielders who never learn to slide to get to a ball, too many infielders don't learn how to field anything that isn't hit directly at them. I was impressed and believe that these young men will go a lot farther than some of their counterparts.
These kids look great. They definitely have the defense down. Although I'm not crazy about a 10 or an 11 yr old side arming, all the time. And I'm not sure about teaching a kid to dive. I understand that it's an advantage to dive the correct way, but diving can be seen as an excuse not getting to the ball quick enough. Meaning train to be quicker, and not to dive.

I never saw somebody teaching kids to dive. Great idea in my opinion. My son has been diving for balls since he was 5. Sometimes, it was even necessary.

But now when he dives. He usually picks it cleanly and makes the throw. It has taught him great body control. But he still dives sometimes when he doesn't need to. Kids like to make the highlight reel. Roll Eyes
