He is just doing what most 7 year olds do. He is trying to lift the ball by hitting it up to get a homerun. I see it all the time in LL. Kids think that they have to swing like that to make the ball go up. Most change eventually when they progress and get more serious. I wouldn't worry about it. One trick you can do is have him wrap the bat. It makes it hard to drop the hands if his shoulder is in the way.
Although I agree with everyone else about just having fun.He is 7 and that is the most important element but being the father of a young son that took an early interest and visited a hitting coach when he was 8.

I could see the Epstein approach of placing the bat on the side of the shoulder for T work really helping this child at such a young age.I know it worked for my son.

Do some of you more experienced instructors agree?

Yep! Great place to start and it's a simple thing to implement.
