1. If a kid plays at a D1 NCAA his Freshman year and Sophomore year and then is let go or leaves, what are his options? Can he go to another D1, sit a year non-scholarship and still have 2 years possibly on scholarship? Or he could go directly to a NAIA and play right away, correct?
Any other options?

2. Kid starts at a JUCO, plays in year 1, has surgery and sits out in year 2,plays at same JUCO year 3 and then plays at a D1 year 4. D1 tells him they can't keep him on scholly because he didn't produce enough, in part because he's not physically sound after surgery.
What are his options? Can he take another redshirt or can he go to another D1 and sit a year before playing or does he have to go NAIA?

Gitnby, I know you're looking for precise answers on both. On both cases it looks to me like both kids do not have the option to go to a D1 next year. In the NCAA a player cannot go from a 4 to 4 unless it's a NAIA school/program.

Looks like both can go directly to an NAIA program and play right away. One having 2 years and the other 1 year. (5yr clock)

Both are tough situations.
Player 1) can transfer to a NAIA, D3, or D2 school and compete immediately, assuming he meets the academic requirements, and subject to any additional conference rules. D2 does require a release from the original school.

He can transfer to a D1, wait until he completes one year of residency, and play two more seasons. He may (but is unlikely to) receive athletic aid during his sit-out year. (14.4.2) If the player was not recruited to his original school and has not received any athletic aid, he may not have to sit out a year.

Player 2) has consumed 3 seasons of competition and 4 years against the D1 5 calendar year rule. He is on scholarship, so there is no possible exception to the one year residency rule. For D1, even though he has one remaining season of eligibility, he can't transfer and use it, because the 5 year period will elapse before he is eligible to compete. In D1, his only option is to remain and play during the 5th calendar year at his current school.

He can transfer to and play at NAIA, D2, or D3 schools. These divisions do not use the 5 year clock; instead the rule is 10 full-time semesters or 15 full-time quarters. He could choose to not enroll full-time for a year, and still have one season of eligibility left in his 6th year. Such a course of action would need to be carefully considered and planned to make sure that he remains academically eligible.
