When the writing appears on the wall that it may be just about over for you.

When you hear the fat lady tuning up her voice in the back hall.

When you see that shoe dangling on the foot.

Just exactly what does it take for one to dig WAY deep down inside themselves and just flat out refuse to lose?

Here's a great example of a player who decided he didn't care what was being said about him and made the most of his opportunities:

He spent is first 7 years in baseball toiling in the minor leagues after being the Texas Rangers 1st Round draft pick out of the University of Tennessee as a Pitcher. His wife who finished in the top of her class at UT worked numerous jobs allowing him to live out his dream. One day while visiting her at work in a local Library he strolled over to the baseball section and found the latest annual MLB prospectus talking about the teams and their (Texas) potential minor league future stars. The likes of Alex Rodriguez, Juan Gonazlez, Pudge Roriguez and Michael Young.

He scans to the bottom of the article and finds these words written:

In the farm system, the Rangers' alleged prospects include former first-round draft pick, (name here), a marginal right-hander who has given no indication that he's ever going to amount to anything.

Fast forward to today - 2012 Cy Young winner - R.A. Dickey, New York Mets

NEVER, EVER give up. When the going get's tough - the tough get going!

Just some winter inspirational fodder going into the break before baseball cranks up!

Imagine how dejected he must have felt the instant that Doug Melvin called into his office after just having his first physical and telling him "we are going to retract our offer" having learning that he has NO UCL in his arm.

A $810,000 signing bonus down the drain in 1 second. Sent home. After having 3 stellar years at UT and playing for Team USA in the 1996 summer Olympics.

Yet, none of these things are as horrible as the things that happened to him in his youth by some older kids when he happened to be left alone with them. Battling these demons alone I understand are sometimes unsurmountable in and of themselves.

Ok. I confess. Im reading his book and I CAN'T put it down. It's rivoting. The more I read the more I can't help but see the resiliency and fight in this young man. And at every turn he totally leans on God to provide and lead him and his wife.

Bacdorslider, I envy you having been able to watch those 2 pitch in high school.
