I was at the Lake Dallas/ Denton Ryan game and the following play occurred...

DR had runners on 1st and 2nd. A double play ball is hit to the second basemen as R1 interferes with him. The umpire called the base runner who oocupied 1st base out but R2 was allowed to advance to 3rd and the batter runner was safe at first. Did the ump make the right call?

Best info I found on this is from the HS Baseball Case Book. The Case Book is an accompanying book to the rule book that describes how to apply the rules in certain situations.

8.4.2 Situation E says, "All bases are occupied with no outs when B4 hits a ground ball to F4 and R3 collides with him as he is fielding the ball. RULING: The ball became dead when interference occurred. R3 is declared out. If the umpire rules that F4 could have executed a double play, then the umpire shall declare two outs (the runner who interfered, and the other runner or batter-runner involved). If the umpire rules that only one runner could have been put out, then only R3 is out. No runs may score and all other runners shall return to bases occupied at the time of interference."

Sounds like he did not make the right call.
The way I understand it, the only judgement is whether to call the batter-runner out or not. Either way, the runner who started on second should have ended up on second. Incorrect ruling.

When this happens, the manager must use the word "protest" before the next play occurs or nothing can be done about the mistake - in professional baseball. I wonder what the procedure is for a mistake in rule application - not judgment - in high school. Anyone?

P.S. Judg(e)ment is correctly spelled either way.
