Don't even know if I can reconstruct it...I had to back up, rethink and try to understand what he said...but here's my best attempt. Razz

At a later point of the game, he was referring back to the Damon blasts and mentioned "everyone's familiar with a hurricane's damage, on TOP of the water (the homer?)...but we need to know that the "riptide" is the walks". applaude

My Gosh! He HAD to have prepared that ahead of time, waiting for the opportune moment to "enlighten" us...what ya' think? What a Bozo! Smile

McCarver is symptomatic of many of the "color" guys doing sports today - they all try too hard to be funny/intelligent/insightful...he was at his best when he was part-time catcher/part-time announcer for the Phillies in 1980...downhill ever since - and have you noticed that his "twang" has gotten more pronounced, the more pronounced his career has gotten - talk about an annoying affectation.
As the great Bob Gibson told McCarver when he strolled to the mound mid-game "Get back behind the plate; the only thing you know about pitching is you can't hit it!" I wish somebody would tell him that about TV commentating!!
The other day he was using all these fancy words to describe players, trying to sound really smart, like an english professor or something. He was talking about how the pitcher's pitches were so "discombotulated" or something like that. As that even a real word?
When Matt Morris was pitching a few days ago, in the 2nd or 3rd he was saying that Morris hasn't thrown his curve yet to anyone when he threw 3 or 4 in the first inning. He'll also tell you that a fastball that bounces in the dirt was "a nasty splitter, the bottom really fell out of that one", or that his slider was a "hanging curveball that didn't drop", thrown at 82 MPH, 8 MPH slower that his fastball. That's a pretty hard thrown curveball, and those 55' fastballs are tough to lay off!

thats how i did it too. i
have the luxury Big Grin of being a giants fan and listening to john miller, not to mention mike
krukow and duane kuiper do fox bay area telecasts.
Cast my vote for Timmy McC as the WORST!!! I don't have enought space to mention all the things that irritate me about McCarver but.. as bad as he is, John Miller is the BEST!!! I love to listen to ESPN radio to hear him call a game.He is to baseball broadcasting what Keith Jackson was to college football.Simply the best!!
