Can't find my rulebook so I'll ask. 9u LL game....No outs, runner on 1st, grounder hit to second baseman. As R1 breaks for second, the firstbaseman steps into his path basically knocking him down. R1 gets tagged out then throw to first doubles up the batter.

I asked the ump why no obstruction call...said he didn't see it. No big deal.

But I'm curious what happens if obstruction was called. Are R1 and B/R both automatically awarded their base or can the defense still make a play on B/R?

Thanks guys.

No, we're not messing with you.

Type A OBS is when a play is being made on the obstructed runner. Dead ball, award bases to nullify the OBS, obstructed runner gets at least one.

Type B is when there is no play being made on the obstructed runner. Let the play finish, then award bases to nullify the OBS. No minimum award.

The HS rule is a bit different. All OBS is delayed dead ball, obstructed runner is awarded at least 1 base.

I thought about whether to rule type A or B. Usually it is obvious between the two. This is a case where it may be a little muddy. You would actually see the play as it happens, but I read it as meaning F3 knocked him down close enough that F4 was able to tag him and then throw to first. To me it sounded more type A. I'm certainly willing to change my mind, and I certainly see your ruling.
However, even if type B, I would think you would award second.
I think so. R1 deserves 2nd for the OBS penalty, and the B/R wasn't obstructed, so if he was out on the play, I'd let that out stand stand.

Mike - I had type B because R1 was breaking for 2nd on the contact when he was obstructed. IMO, pretty unlikely F4 had the ball at this point, and he couldn't be making a play on R1 without the ball. HTBT fer sure.

Under HS rules, the ball would stay live (delayed dead) and R1 would get at least one base on the OBS.
