I have just recently come out of football, and I just started back with baseball today. I went into the first practice- just a fun intersquad scrimmage- and looked as though I had never played the game, booting balls all over the outfield. Going home feeling dejected I feel like some of the guys that have told me my best sport is baseabll have been wrong. So my question is, is this a normal thing for the transition? Did anyone or anyone's son/sons go through this? Sorry, not to make this sound like a pity party!

Yes, your story reminds me of a time my son looked like he had never handled a bat. His freshman year he was playing JV and hitting well. He went on a trip over Spring Break and didn't pick up a bat for more than a week. His first day back in school, his team played the weakest team in the conference. Son struck out 3 times and frankly didn't come close to hitting the ball.

When I asked him after the game what happened, he said: "I felt like I had never swung a bat before."

That was after one week off, so I can certainly understand that missing all of Fall practice could make you feel that way.
My son is considered a pretty good baseball player. Right now, he's a middle linebacker and tailback averaging 25 carries a game on his high school football team. Usually after the football season, he hits like someone looking for the light switch in a pitch black room for a week or so before starting to feel like a hitter again. Be patient and relax. It's very normal.
