Hey everyone,

I'm currently trying to make a decision on where to sign this summer and I'm trying to narrow down my choices. Does anyone have any experience with the San Luis Obispo Rattlers. Not the Blues of the CCL, the Rattlers are an independent team. I'd like info about the team, the competition they play, the town, just anything pretty much.

Also wanted to see if anyone had experience with the Western Major Baseball League in Canada. I'm not too sure on anything about the league so any help would be appreciated. How's the competition up there? Just stuff like that. Thanks in advance!

My son played one game for them when he was a Soph in HS and actually got his first "collegiate win" pitching for them when they were in the CCL several years ago. I heard they dropped out of this league last year and I assume it was for financial reasons, but don’t really know. Their home field is the same field as the Blues, which is still in the CCL, and I looked at their schedule and see that they played them a few times last year. They also play some other scout teams, independents and a few summer Jr. college teams. Looks like they are made up mostly of Jr College players plus a few others

As far as the level of play it is probably below the CCL level, and somewhere between Jr college baseball and high level scout ball out here on the West Coast. They probably don’t see a lot of D1 pitching, but maybe a game here or there. I don’t know how they handle housing for kids out of the area as far as host families, etc.

San Luis Obispo is a fantastic town, it is home to Cal Poly and it is one of the true “college towns” on the West Coast. Town is in Cental Cal, about 35,000. There will probably be some college kids around who are taking summer school, plus tourists coming through. Weather is perfect, gets a little cool from the sea breezes in the afternoon, (if you think 55-60 is cool) but warms up to the 80’s during the day. Pretty much the same weather every day, coastal fog in morning, clearing to 80 then cooling in the evening. As far as place to spend the summer, you probably could not find a better one.

A friend of mine’s son played for them when they were in the CCL, and was pretty knowledgeable about them. I can call him if you need more information on them. Send me a PM if you want more information.

BOF's assessment is accurate. The link below is to an article that best defines what the Rattlers have become... sort of a minor league version of the SLO Blues. The roster and schedule for 2011 confirms the direction of the article. Most players are recent HS grads or first year JC kids from the central coast area. The competition is typically Calif JC summer teams and good club teams. Travel is to Southern Cal, Fresno and Bakersfield. SLO is a great place but if you are thinking L.A. or San Francisco, think the opposite... sleepy coastal tourist town (about 8 miles from the ocean) with little traffic and sparsely populated.

I think the article says it very well. My son played there after his freshman summer in college and loved
being in SLO because it is a great college town and the beach is close by. The management team was good, the head coach very good, and his host family was awesome. Competition was good in the CCl and there was an All Star game in LA with lots of scouts.

But based on the format now I don't think the competition will be as good with out being in the CCl. I think if your son wants really good competition he should look at other teams or leagues.
Good luck with your search.
