I am so tired from our commute back and forth from KC to Omaha, that I haven't been around here lately!
Yes, my son's team was in the CWS! What an experience! He plays for the Arkansas Razorbacks, and after going undefeated in the OU regional and Tallahassee Super Regional, we were thrilled to be in Omaha. Did you happen to catch that Ark/VA game? Got home at 2:30am that night and had to have my HS son at Area Code tryouts that same morning... an additional 2 hour drive after only 3 hours of sleep.
I'm too old for all this, but wouldn't trade it for the world!
As to the CWS experience, there is nothing like it. My son pitches out of the bullpen. He got to face the MVP of the series, Jared Mitchell, in the final game. Son came in to a lefty on lefty situation with runners on 2nd and 3rd, one out. The game wasn't close, but my heart was pounding! Took Mitchell to a full count, and walked him. We have the tape at home and it sure looks like he struck out looking twice, but its hard to get that call somtimes. Son says at this level its more about hitting your spots than catching a corner. Ah, well! Since Mitchell had so many HR's, RBI's and big hits, we'll be content with our result!
A memorable moment for my son was after the final game. He came down the elevator to meet us for dinner and Oral Hershiser got on. My son had on an Ark tshirt and Mr. Hershiser asked if he was on the team. Son said yes and identified himself by his number. Mr. Hershiser proceeded to cite my son's name, position, velocity and stats from the game and the season. Son asked how he knew all that and was told that the commentators are doing a job and study each team in depth before the game. Son had a small role, but it sure made his day to know that someone famous, who we greatly admire, remembered him.
We're hoping this experience carries over to our Son's JR year. He's playing summer ball and is the closer. 5 appearances these past two weeks, 3 saves and a 0.00 ERA. Hasn't let an inherited runner score. We see a new confidence that playing at the highest level can bring. Its amazing how much about baseball is mental!
I will cherish the pictures from the CWS, especially the Rosenblatt scoreboard with his scowling mug shot when he was introduced. The internet is great. I got to sit back and enjoy the games, knowing the great Arkansas fans would supply me with lots of photos! Here's hoping the HOGS are back in Omaha next year!
Woo Pig Sooie!
