At our game the other night, the opposing team had a runner on third, two outs. Batter hits a fly ball into right field. Runner misses first base and stops at second. We appeal the missed base and umpire calls batter out at first. Inng is over, but umpire allows run from third to count. Doesn't the batter have to reach first base safely before run from third can count?

I thought that in this situation that the runner obtained the bag when he crossed the bag and that would allow the run to score on the appeal.
I thought that in this situation that the runner obtained the bag when he crossed the bag and that would allow the run to score on the appeal.
He acquired 1st base when he crossed it, but un-acquired it when his miss was appealed.
