Want to tell my kid how to handle this in the future...
Runners on 2nd and 3rd. My son is pitching. Batter hits a shot into the C/R gap.
Knowing the runners on base are going to score he watches the B/R to judge where he should set up to back up the throw in.
He watches the B/R miss 1st as he heads for second.
After he gets the ball back, he says to the FU that he wants to appeal that the runner missed 1st. He throws over and the base is tagged. The FU then signals safe and says, "That's not my call to make".
My son then turned to the PU and tried to begin the whole appeal again but was told, "You only get one chance to appeal, and you appealed to the wrong umpire."
The problem is then aren't the players being asked to know the mechanics that the crew is using on every play? In the future should he just ask who is responsible for a call before making the appeal?
In this situation should the FU have said that's not my call before ruling on the appeal?
Our HC went out discuss the call, and the PU confirmed that he saw the runner miss the bag, but since it wasn't appealed to him, the call stands.
