It's got to be done specifically for each college. College A may get 9,000 applicants for 1,000 freshman spots. College B may only get 3,000 applicants.

Once you look at the # of applicants per slot, then the number of students taken off the waiting list each year has to be taken into consideration. That will help account for people applying to more than one college and getting accepted.

Quick rule of thumb. Look at the 25/75 percentile SAT scores of the incoming freshmen class. It's normally available on each college website. See where you SAT fits into the norm accepted.

There are some institutions with multiple schools (e.g., Univ of California) that allow you to submit one applicaton for multiple schools. I am pretty sure the UC's allow that and it would be worthwhile to check into the California State College/University system to see if they allow one application for multiple schools ... that can save application fees.
