Appreciation for the men in Blue

Our HS hosted an event for training umpires. We had an intra-squad game (JV and V) that lasted forever but the true reason for the games was for umpires to learn in a “live” environment.

I listened intently and knew most of the rules and positions until they got to do a 3 man field – I was lost and I think most of the new umps were as well..

Umpiring is a lot more then calling balls and strikes or calling safe or out. I was very impressed with the “strategy” of umpiring and the “feeling” the game.

I always thought I might like being a man in Blue, but I honestly didn’t realize how much you needed to know.

As I have said before, I have never made a bad call form my seat in the stands!!!
To our military men, women and families - You are all awesome - that flag is yours and I thank you for the opportunity for giving me the honor of removing my cap prior to every baseball game I see.

Watching a good crew is quietly impressive. It's not normal to watch the umps much but I do sometimes. Next time a ball is hit down the line or in the gap you'll see each guy hustling to cover their respective responsibilities. Or if it's a poor crew you'll see them all standing there watching the ball. Fortunately that's pretty rare and it makes you appreciate when the crew knows what they're doing.

It's interesting to see a play where the home plate ump makes a call at 3B or the 1B ump makes a call at the plate.

When i was in charge of hiring and monitoring umpires we had 10 games during tryouts. The umpire Assoc. would give us 3 umpires a game 1 experienced and 2 training free of charge. I felt it was a deal, they felt it was more than a deal. They would call a couple of months ahead of time to make sure it was still on. They used this as training, evaluated the umpires and placed them based on our games. Games during tryouts was a great idea, not mine , but it gave all coaches a look at players in game time before the draft.
