I recently attended a showcase with 8+ D1 schools there and many other D2's and 3's along with several NAIA and JUCO's. I received an email from a coach at one of the lower level D1's that was there expressing that they enjoyed watching me at the camp and wanted to see more of me sometime. They then followed up with telling me about their camp and that they could evaluate me more there in person and wished me a happy holidays and that they hoped to see me there. I feel as though it can be interpreted 2 ways. One being that they do have a legitimate interest in me or two; that they're trying to get me to attend this camp to just make money. I do not have a lot to spend on these types of camps and showcases so I must choose wisely. I'm so weary of this as I'm somewhat all over the board in interest from other colleges. I've spoken with a NAIA with a similar camp invite and they asked me to follow up with the coach personally as to my availability to attend, then a JUCO which offered me to come visit them after speaking with the HC over the phone for a good 40 minutes. So I'm quite lost as to where I really stand as I'm all over the board when it comes to level of colleges interested. So to clarify, my question is really, are they interested? and is it worth it?

To give you an idea of my pitching abilities: I'm a RHP in the class of 2016. I'm 5'11, my fastball is a consistent 85-87 reaching to 88-89 range. I throw a very nice knuckle curve and somewhat decent change-up.

Your profile seems very similar to my son.

Couple of things to consider.  You said you don't have a great deal of money to go to camps, etc.  I can appreciate that.  So if not a camp how else can you get in front of this or your other target schools.

My son did have some luck attending camps after coaches had made personal contact after they had seen him pitch.  You wouldn't be going to the camp cold as they have seen you at this showcase previously. Ultimately the school my son committed to was a combination of seeing him pitch in a PG tourney, my son attending a camp, and then the school seeing him pitch one more time in another PG event about 6 months post camp.  My son kept in regular contact (every other month or so) during the process.

Our experience is that camps can be fruitful if they know who you are prior.  Good luck to you and hang in there.

This is a tough situation as I have been through that before with my older son who now plays at a d1 in Kentucky. After a PG Showcase he received a letter from that d1 saying to come to their camp for further evaluation. Considering you velocity I would go in the spring/summer because you are ready since you've been playing baseball. Best of luck.

Your velocity is certainly where it needs to be to get serious consideration from a D1.  Did they give you a cell number....or mention that you should/could call them.  Usually that's a pretty good sign...if they gave you a number, go ahead and give them a call....ask some questions and you'll have a pretty good idea of what their thoughts are.  Good luck

Do you have a summer coach or high school coach that can call the d1 school and see if they have legit interest?   Your velo makes me think they might have legit interest, BUT so many times they send these to every player.

You said this was a lower level D1, so they might still be looking for players in that class. Why don't you look at their web page and see how many players are at your position and their class.  Also do they take a lot of Juco's , many mid to low d1's do that.

I would think that if they are truely interested then you will hear from them regardless of whether you go to their camp.

This is just my imediate take based on the info you posted. It sounds to me that they are just emailing off a list. Your velo is good, keep working on that chnge up.

If they are truly interested, they will be doing more then inviting you to their camp in an email. If money is limited, let them know that you just can't be spending on visibility camps. I remember back when my son was getting down to crunch time coaches that were interested would pro rate camp fee just to have him come throw a few innings just get another look.

Take a look at some of the PG pitching videos and see if you can put together something that mirrors what they look like and send them out.

Lastly, use your camp money wisely. Go to the ones(Showcases) that will get the most amount of eyes watching from schools that meet your abilities.

You say your not sure where you fit, then you need to get a third party evaluation. PG USA is the best.

Keep reaching out on this site to get help. There are many folks on here that can help you. Good luck and us posted.

Thank you all for your replies,

The coach did include a office number, but no cell number. I do have a summer coach that would be willing to do that @barcdorslider. He is a former professional pitcher with strong ties to many of the schools in the region. That also crossed my mind (the sending these emails to every player). Although addressed to me, mentioning which showcase they saw me at specifically and the comment about my pitching in particular, I don't doubt the fact they most likely sent many of these out. They seem to have a lot of Juniors and Seniors on their roster and very few underclassmen that are pitchers.

{Edit} Just saw your reply (must have been in the process of typing this when you replied). Unfortunately we don't have any of the PG events near where I am. I will be making a visit to a JUCO that invited me as previously stated in which he extended his hand in assisting me on what to ask and any questions I have while going through this recruiting process (stated that I was a talented young pitcher that has potential and he will help in any way he can) so perhaps I'll ask him some of this stuff too.

Would it be worth it to send a clip of my current pitching to them as well (in a non-forceful way) to gauge their interest before laying down the money for this camp? I was not at my best at this showcase and have much more in the tank and stuff to show. Especially in the case that I can't go (as I look at my wallet) would sending that video be a good idea to really see how interested they are?

I think they are interested, but with the money issue  I would explain all this to summer coach and have him contact the RC at this school and see what they say to him...

Sending them a video is good, keep it short.... and dont mention being not at your best.....  Juco is a good option , PM me if you need more info on Juco's BTW what are your grades like?

Perhaps asking them if there is other opportunities to be seen by them? Such as any other camps or if they want me to send a video etc.? As far as grades, I am in a advanced academic program at my high school that consists of a ton of AP classes (starting Freshmen year) that if you do well you will be able to test out essentially of the first 2 years of college. It's pretty much 4 years of college prep in a HS setting. So my grades are fine to go almost anywhere academically. I almost prefer 2 years of a JUCO first unless I am able to get some money to attend a 4 year university while playing baseball.
