My son was blessed with having an invite to an area code TRYOUT - looking for insight as to what to expect. Any insight is greatly appreciated.

Expect to see a lot of talented players and lots of scouts. If you are fortunate enough to be selected for the main event in Long Beach you will see even more talented players and more scouts. It is a big deal, congratulations and best of luck.
It's a great experience. Definitely worth attending the tryout even if he doesn't make the team.
My 2016 son received an invite as well. He is thrilled. Can anyone comment on the amount of college coach exposure? The tryout my son will attend overlaps with PG Junior National, and I would assume that would be the priority event for top schools given a choice of one over the other. We are planning to go either way, but I am just curious what types of schools might be there (it is in NY).
My 2014 went twice and it is a great event. Outside of the PG event in Jupiter it will be the most scouts you see in one place. You can't pay your way in so the players are all good.

I sent you a PM. Thank you.
My 2014 tried out and made the team last year. I agree with the other posters that there are tons of pro and college scouts there.
As far as what to expect at the tryout, it is a very small sample size. Pitchers will get an inning or ~15 pitches. If you get 3 ground balls on 3 pitches dont expect another inning. Position players will get maybe 2 AB's.
For pitchers, my advice is to be ready when your number is called. Do your band work early and be ready to let it rip. They have alot of kids to see and you will want to get your velo up right away. On our team, all of the pitchers (with the exception of a couple 2-way guys) were 90+.
Another thing to consider is that your performance in the tryout isnt the only factor in your selection. Performance in other events leading up to the tryout will likely be taken into consideration.
Long Beach is a great experience. Great venue, weather, incredible talent on every team. We had a ton of fun.
Best of luck to your sons!
Does anyone know approximately how many 2017s will be at the Area Code Games? I would assume the final event would be rich in Juniors and Seniors.
Delmon Young played at age 13, Dimitri Young played age15 Gerald Laird age,15
all played in our Goodwill Series.
The pro scouts recommended each player. We average 400 scouts and college coaches
at the games.

Of the three classes is it normally more Seniors and Juniors with a few sophomores sprinkled in or is the ratio pretty even?
No brainer.
Now no seniors, 90 per cent Juniors.

Just so all are on same page and to clarify, you mean 90% rising Seniors, so Summer after Junior year. Correct?

So if that is accurate it must be an honor if a rising Sophomore or Junior get's a invite.
I wonder what prepster was trying to say?
Ask the Prepster.
It was "fun" when our hitting clinic included Eric Davis, Tony Brewer and Dusty Baker.
It was also "fun" when the Navy Seals dropped in by parachute on our clinic at Jack Murphy Stadium San Diego.

Bob: You still have any pull?
JP will attend the Houston AC tryouts June 24.
GET THOSE SEALS BACK, MAN!!
(a 10-year Navy dad who served with some of those amazing guys on the USS America)
My last "pull" was with Albert P. in 1998.

I don't see many colleges at the tryouts but there are plenty at the main event in CA. If you get an invite to tryout, you go. Plain and simple.
Exciting, you must be very proud.
Our son went to the tryouts last year/2013 as a soph, he is looking forward to this year.
He said it was the best collection of talented players overall he has been on the field with.
He was 15 last year and his goal was to show he belonged.
There is a lot of pressure, there were many colleges in the stands and pro scouts right behind the backstop
Some kids understandably tried to do too much to impress.
The other posts are accurate, short warm-ups and a few chances.
Most infielders had 3-4 grounders and many were of course trying (too) hard to impress. Outfielders also. Am sure many are far better than they showed in such a brief chance. Some players were very good.
Seemed many colleges left after the pitchers finished, which was unfortunate as my son hit after that and 5 of his 6 allotted swings were line drives ranging from LCF to RCF, (doubles in the gap type hits) the MLB scouts behind the backstop told him he hit well, way to hit, etc....which made his day (and mine)
the three batters ahead of him had popped up into the 'turtle' on the 1st 2 pitches and were basically told 'thank you'.
The scout who recommended son sent a message that he hit well, caught/threw well and to keep working hard towards next year.
Definitely a must-attend in our experience, led to attention and other invites to 'invite-only' events.
If nothing else it is a valuable experience for a younger player going forward, he was relatively calm/cool at other events after that (colleges, showcases, etc).
You will see a lot of talent on the field and get an objective view of your son's potential/possibilities vs others. (as much as a short one day sample can show).
Congratulations to your son and Good Luck!
Have all the invites gone out for all the regions? 2015 LHP hoping for a shot...
website says some guys get notified days before.
i doubt it.

My son was invited 7 days before the tryouts in 2009...
The AC tryout was perhaps the single most important thing my son did to get recruited. There were approximately 60 college scouts and about another 20 MLB scouts present. Definitely a must go if invited!
Although he did not make the team he was invited to something called the Summer Rivalry Classic, which was great as well.
Mine has gotten his. Second shot at making the team - fingers crossed that he makes it this time.
Area Code in spring of 2012 in NYC was attended by 60-80 college coaches and 25 or so pro scouts. Great exposure. Because it was a one day event and they had approx 100 players not everyone got to hit so some people were not pleased. The event is free so the grumblers did not have any real beef - IMO.
Congrats and good luck to all that receive the invite for the tryouts. Kauai is not exactly a hot spot for scouting so my son is not holding his breath for an invite .
Again, good luck
Am I correct that you have to be recommended by a professional scout, for this event? If so, do you initiate contact with a local scout, and have him look at your son? Also, how many locations Area Code games played? Thanks!
Ohio Dad;
Since 1987, when we started the Area Code games, pro scouts always made the recommendations. Each year, I had an advisory committee to provide "feedback" for the fine tuning of the tryouts and main event.
Goodwill Series began in 1983 with the scouts recommending players.
Our MLB alumni now is over 500.

Congrats to your son ! The Area Code Games tryout was a great experience for my son. There were a bunch of schools at The SoCal Brewers tryout last summer.I can't tell you an exact number, but there were about 100 players and way more MLB scouts/college coaches. It's the only event my son ever attended that had more scouts/coaches than players.
I did see all the D1 conferences in the west represented PAC11,WCC,Big West,Mountain West etc.Lots of SoCal D2's, D3's,NAIA,& JUCO's too.Cornell & Dartmouth were there as well.
I would imagine the NY tryout would be well attended,
Good luck to your son !
Thanks guys! Good info.
Thanks guys! Good info.
+1
Thanks everyone - hoping for an invite.
My nephew is going to Houston... He is looking forward to it.
Hope everyone's son did well and enjoyed it.
Thankfully the skies cleared and sun came out this week for son's tryout.
Great experience,
sure is a lot of pressure, Everyone with a logo (pro/college) is looking at you.
and yes some players received a small opportunity,a few balls/swings.
Son ran well and hit the heck out of the ball, very proud.
son said the scout threw the " best BP ever" (fast and hard)
many D1 coaches there, been receiving personal emails, invites to schools, etc.
(which as others said is not an offer, though is good attention)
an invitation to a pro camp
and received Scouting Bureau email to register for 2015 draft.
Whether he makes the AC team or not, already seeing results.
Advise anyone invited to choose this over something else your son is invited to
IF you think he is ready for this situation.
Bob, thank you for creating this great event.
Catcherdad - which tryout did you go to? Our boys went to the Reds tryout in Phoenix on June 9 and was wondering what the timing is for the roster announcement.
Hello Zippity,
NY area tryouts.
Assume they are working on it, there was a rainout here and 1 day was rescheduled,
whatever happens, it was a great day.
Good Luck to your son!
