MYSson is going to his first Area Code tryout soon. He has no idea what to expect from it.  One friend who played in it last year said they had two rounds of tryouts:  one was basic skills and the second (if you made it) was some bp and scrimmage.  Others told him it was just one round.

the paperwork said it was a 10 hour day for my son, so we aren't sure what's going to fill those 10 hours.

is there a standard trout format or does each team do things differently (his friend played for another team than the one hosting his tryout, so the format might be different, i guess)

Expect the team to be picked already and the tryout a formality. The only players they will take from the rest of the guys will be players who have draft talent.

That being said it's the single best showcase I've been to. Tons of colleges there, a lot of very good players, and completely free.

I wouldn't go in expecting much, but the tryout alone is great. A lot of interest came from it.

thanks.  we figured that already.  just really wondering what they're doing for 9 hours (8-5).

the ones here in oklahoma were almost like showcases...individual work at their positions, ie catchers would do pop times, etc.  Then a round or 2 of batting practices.  Pitchers threw at the end and everyone but pitchers and catchers went home at this point..there was no live scrimmage (this was 3 years ago) but it lasted 4 or 5 hours.  Great experience...just have son focus on doing what he does best...team is already picked but tons of college coaches taking notes in the stands....

Last year for ours it was:

Check in before 9am and have your picture taken.

-Run 60's by position, clocked for time.
-OFers threw to third and then threw to home from RF. Velos were recorded.
-IFers all lined up at SS and took ground balls throwing to first. Velos were recorded.
-First baseman took grounders, throwing to third. Velos recorded.
-Catchers threw down to second. Pop times and velos recorded.
-Batting practice (each group got to hit twice). This is what takes up a good portion of the day.
-Pitchers arrive. Pitchers and two way kids throw bullpens. If they like you, you get told to stop throwing and save it for the evening.

After this is all done, the coaches and scouts talk to the players. They then go into the locker room for about 30 minutes to come up with a list of kids that will stay for the evening scrimmage. They come out and announce the kids to stay.

Then they play a scrimmage for as long as it takes to get through all the pitchers. I believe last year we got done a little after 8pm.
