A little confused, maybe someone can tell me if this is normal. 2018 received an email congratulating him on being selected to tryout for the Reds for the Area Code Games (underclass). There was a registration link. After filling this out and sending it in, he got a follow up email telling him his application was under review and they'd let him know what decision is reached. So, was he invited or not? Was this an extension of an invitation or simply an invitation to attend the tryouts? Here's the text:

Congratulations on being invited to the 2016 Cincinnati Reds Area Code Team Underclass Tryout! On behalf of Area Code Baseball and the Cincinnati Reds, welcome.

You are part of an elite group of players who has an opportunity to earn a spot on the Cincinnati Reds Area Code Team or the Milwaukee Brewers Underclass Team.

The Area Code Games is the most prestigious and elite event in the nation and will be played in Long Beach, California from August 6 through August 10 or from August 10 through 12 if you make the Reds Area Code Baseball Underclass Team.

Your physical abilities, desire, work ethic and positive attitude are a few of the attributes that contributed to this invitation you received. This invitation to a tryout is the first step of the difficult evaluation process required to make the team representing the Cincinnati Reds. Since 1987, the Area Code Games have produced more than 500 Major League Players and the number continues to grow each year.

Here is your tryout information and link to register:

WHEN and WHERe
Please specify your PRIMARY position only, as you will only be able to tryout at one position. Make sure it is the position you feel you will play at the next level.

In addition to the online registration, the following waivers must be turned in at athlete check in to participate in the tryout:
PLEASE BRING THE COMPLETED TWO WAIVERS TO TURN IN AT ATHLETE CHECK IN ON THE DAY OF THE TRYOUT.

fyi, that link to register is hot.  They may have some extra kids trying out this year!

'splain yourself. Are you saying they have invited an abnormally abundant number of players?

No, He is saying your link is HOT..... anyone can open it................ Congrats on the invite, good luck

Ah, $#@^. Edited. Yeah, they may have a few extra attendees. Make sure you told them I sent you.

I took a look at that link while it was available and found one question (actually two) on the application to be very interesting.

The question was, "Do you play high school football?  If "No"...why not?"

Curious why that question was on there...and specifically for football.  I can see asking if you play any other high school varsity sports...but odd that they singled out football and implied it was a "bad" thing if your answer was no by asking you to justify it.

Just a shot in the dark, and biased by my own opinion, but...

I think there is something to be said for the conditioning drills done by football players, and the overall athleticism required of certain positions.   To the point that I think strength & conditioning coaches training baseball players could learn a lot from football S&C coaches (not a knock on baseball S&C coaches).

In general, I think playing other sports is good for overall athletic development, even if you have already decided on a primary sport.  It's good for proprioception, kinesthetic awareness, athletically moving your body, and being able to pick up and learn new skills more quickly in your main sport.

I saw a stat the other day (and I realize that 92.315% of stats are made up) that 87.5% of NFL draftees were multi-sport athletes.

So, maybe they are of the same belief, and it's a question to gauge the overall athleticism?  Agree that the "why not?" portion of the question is a bit interesting.
