2014 Son just got back from the area code workout in Chicago and I knew he did real well down there but I cannot believe the exposure this gave him. The workout was Tuesday and we started receiving nonstop communications from coaches that evening and since then. Lot of schools he never even considered as options now seem to be open to him.

These seem to be genuine interest and nothing like the form letter stuff we received for the last year. The coaches have all asked for him to call them and send schedules.

Is this just the norm after this event?

(assuming your son is a Jr turning Sr)  Area code is one of those events a lot of coaches attend, College teams probably like the tryouts, better than the actual event.  The games in long beach may have had the second most scouts I've ever seen anywhere (WWBA in Jupiter is #1)

This maybe their fist look at your son.  If he gets a request to call...   DO IT! ASAP!  it will show his interest.  Wanting to know his schedule, means they are trying to get a 2nd,3rd or more look.  Definitely a good sign.

That said, all those letters and even a lot of phone calls, and even official visits mean nothing until offers come in.  Coaches may really like your son but they could have another kid at the same position, and may want to juggle the scholarship amount to somewhere else.  You really never know until  he gets the offer.  (and even then as another thread has pointed out, you only really know when he is playing on the field)   But if there is a program that your son really likes, don't be bashful, letting the coach know.

What really amazes me is that over the last few years we have been to a lot of paid events (some very expensive) that did not have anywhere near the effect this one did for free.

So far prior to this we did see some d1 request and visted a couple of campuses With one offer last fall.(was his #1 pick school since 13) He just didn't want to commit to them as they depth charts looked to full and the coach flat out told him that he would be mostly sitting his first year. His new criteria is somewhere warm and where he will get to play. He wants D1 but he wants the play time more.
