I know coaches can't argue balls & strikes, but can they argue balks?

The coach can ask for an explanation of the balk call.
The new mechanic at the pro level is to incorporate the reason for the balk call into the balk call.
Example: "That's a balk! TIME! That's a balk...didn't come set...you second base."

All a coach should want is an explanation of the call if he is unsure. What is frustrating for me as a coach is to coach game after game , season after season and never argue with an umpire. Yes ask for an explanation once in awhile. And then sit there and watch the opposing coach or coaches argue constantly about things that are so ridiculous to me. If these guys would spend as much time coaching as they do B*tching and moaning about umpires maybe their teams wouldnt suk so bad. jmo

I've got to agree with you on the constant b*tching. My son's HS coach argues at least 5 calls per game and most are totally pointless. Much of the time he has made a stupid coaching descision and it has come back to bite him, so he argues. Trying to steal 3rd with no outs for instance. I'm all for a good argument but if you have 5 or more per game, I'm sure that no ump is going to be listening to anything you have to say.

A coach / pitcher should get a reason for the balk. After that it's the umpire's call.
Did anyone see Tim Wakefield of the Red Sox today? If ever there was a "he didn't stop" call, it should've happened today (and I'm a Red Sox fan).

IMO I would first ask the umpire politely "Sir, may I ask the reason for the balk?" I find it that you will get alot farther speaking politely to an umpire. However, the umpire should give you the reason before even needing to ask him.
