Welcome to the HSBBW Jeff...

The Angel Amatuer basaball program in Arizona is run by the club out of their Tempe Diablo Stadium facilities. Each year the program grows reaching out to high school age baseball players through Arizona and beyond. John Gracio, a long time area scout for the Cubs and now for the Angels, is the main man in charge. He is closely assisted by Jeff Fallon, who is also an associate scout for the Angels and has a seperate college prep program going to get kids into college. There is a very high probability that playing in the Angels Amatuer program will get various opportunities to play in front of college recruiters. Many boys from the program go on to D1-3, NAIA and Juco colleges.

In my opinion, it is a great program that is spreading its wings in an attempt to search for baseball talent. The boys on the various teams will play some of the best players the western US has to offer and will play in some of the best exposed tournaments in the west such as the Four Corners Classic on June 5-7, if a scout recommends a player an opportunity to tryout for the Area Code Tryout on June 12th, Connie Mack World Series Qualifier on June 21-27, USABF 4th of Classic in San Diego, CA, are among some of the opportunities to play high quality baseball.

I don't know about others on this board, but Ryanrod23's son (2012) is going to play in the program as well as my son (2012) this summer. It is a good opportunity if he can make it out here...

I hope I have answered your questions.

Coach Waltrip is right on the money with his information. My son had the pleasure of playing for Jeff Fallon and a number of of his HS teammates played for the Angels summer scouting program. There truly is a lot of exposure and the kids play against a high level of competition. One more thing about Jeff Fallon and his work with kids and coaches around the country, 4thGen had six college coaches around the country whose first questions to him on recuiting visits were about playing for Jeff.

In fact there is a 2010 that yesterday broke the total base record at 4thGen's HS that played in the Angels program last summer and fall. After facing the college pitchers and high level prospects he saw in the summer HS pitching has not been much of a mystery.

Good luck to your friends' son.
I am not exactly sure about the connection with the Angels Summer Program and the Arizona Angels from Tucson but The Arizona Angels team was formed last year after granted a team by USAB primarily to compete for the 2009 16U USAB West Championships and will still do this year. Prior to last year, there was only 1 16U USA BAseball team coming out from Tucson ( SABA). Both 16U teams did well last year finishing in the top 16th. RR23Jr played for SABA last summer.

They may very well be a Tucson arm of Coach Gracio's program but not 100% sure as well.

We will be participating for the Angels Summer Program for Coach Gracio and Fallon. And yes Coach W, we will be driving back and forth Tucson and Phoenix to make it work. One good thing is they are aware about HS summer programs and they are willing to work around our HS schedule which lasts until the July 4th weekend. That means we will be playing for our HS team in the same tournament the Angels are participating July 4th. Funny how that goes.

I believe Angel teams will be announced by next weekend. There are several scout team programs in the greater Phoenix area but the Angels Summer program maybe the most participated with regards to amount of players/coaches involved. I think Jmoff's son will also particpate in the ANgels Summer program.

Good luck to your son and your friend's son Mr. Hogan.

@ Ms baseballperfect,

There are several.. White Sox in Tucson, Angels/Rays/Dodgers/Diamondbacks scout teams in the Phoenix area.

For the most part all scout teams requires some sort of a tryout unless a player is an ultimate stud. For example the Chicago White Sox Scout team based in Tucson conducts a "SCOUT/TRYOUT" Day prior to picking players for their team. On our part and since RR23JR was an unknown quantity at that time and still is, we had to do an evaluation/tryout like most players so they would have an idea where RR23Jr will be placed for the Summer.

The payment for fees are collected after you make a team and does not guarantee playing time. Hard work combined with talent will earn you coaches respect and hence playing time. It is much sweeter knowing you made a team because the coach feels you can contribute to his team.

Good Luck to your son. How is he doing this season and how is the summer plans coming along?

@ Coach W...Thanks for the kind words Smile .

In Arizona, there are true Major League scout teams in the fall. These are operated in Phoenix by the Rays, the Diamondbacks and the Angels. Sometimes there are tryouts; sometimes there are invitations. Depends on the team and on the player.

The cost usually is under $50 -- this is for a hat, a tee shirt and for a tournament fee at the end of the fall.

In the spring, some of the scouts put together teams to compete in the state AABC organization (Connie Mack, Don Mattingly, Mickey Mantle and Sandy Koufax). These involve significant fees and are related but separate from the scout teams in the fall. The Rays do not participate in this.

There are many players who play on a particular scout team in the fall and a different Connie Mack team in the spring. The better the player, usually the greater the options.
