I was just checking out some PG numbers for guys that catch and play the outfield and I found that for a lot of guys they were gunned about 8-10 mph faster in the outfield than from their catcher spot. Is this common in your experiences? I have been gunned catching, but never from the outfield. Do you think adding 8 mph on to my catching speed would be about what I throw from the OF or does it really just depend on the player? I saw one guy with 14 mph difference. Just curious. Thanks!

IowaPlayer5,

This is something I see all the time. This difference is one of the things I test for when I do an initial evaluation of a catcher. What I have found is that with good mechanics a catcher should see no more then a 3 percent drop from crow hop to crouch mph. If the drop is higher then that there are problems in his throwing mechanics that are "eating" velocity.

If guys are loosing 8-10 mph coming out of their crouch I believe there are serious issues with their mechanics from the crouch.
