2 outs, runner on 3rd. I'm in "B" position. Ground ball to short. Throw to first is a little short. But ball does get there before runner. HOWEVER - I don't know if 1st baseman pulled his foot or not. Do I make the out/safe call FIRST, then ask for help of plate ump if he pulled his foot? ... OR ... do I ask for help BEFORE I make the call?

Always make the call first and a quickly as possible to show confidence and decisiveness, the only time you hesitate is if you do not know if he has the ball and you ask him to show you the ball on a play which you can't see if he keeps control of the ball such as a collision at home plate.

You can ask for help only if it is questioned.

You do know there is a forum for "ask the umpire"....
There is a forum called "ask the umpire" below on this message board and I'm sure you will get the right answer. IMO, you make a call and hope you got it right. Sell it like you did and walk away, if you aren't sure about the call and the other Coach asks you to appeal it to the Home Plate umpire you say, sure, I have no problem with that.

If you don't at least act confident, the fans and Coaches will eat you alive!
Welcome Dave and while it's a great question we do have a section for questions for umps. We got a great crew that do a great job explaining any question you could ever come up with.

When you are looking at all the different forums after you get into the message boards just scroll down and you will see it. It will be just under the coaches forum.
