Watching a game recently and a team was obviously trying to break a pithcer's rythmn and was asking for numerous time outs between pitches. Eventually a batter asked for time and stepped out of the box, the request came late and the umpire did not grant the request. The pither continued with the pitched and looked like a strike from where I was sitting. The umpired called it a strike.

The question was asked : what it the ball had been thrown in the dirt would the umpire still called it a strike because the batter was not it the box. I stated that I thought the umpire would call it just like any other pitch, if it was a in the strike zone he would call it a strike and if it was a ball it would be called a ball. The fact the batter was out of the box does not matter.

Was I correct?

Now if the batter went ahead, swung and hit the ball while outside the box he would be called out.

Baseball's best teams lose about sixty-five times a season. It is not a game you can play with your teeth clenched.

Is there any wiggle room in terms of intent with this? A guy is backing out of the box and it's flat out obvious he's going to have both feet out of the box but only has one out by the time of the pitch - still an automatic strike or call it as it is?
Did anyone happen to catch the Univ of Louisiana-Monroe vs Middle Tennessee State game on ESPNu yesterday?

Batter requests time out. Umpire grants it, but its real close - grants it right as pitcher starts wind-up. Batter steps out, pitcher continues delivery and uncorks one to the plate AND NAILS THE BATTER standing behind the batters box! Hits him in the leg pretty good.

End result seemed to be a "nothing" since time was out, but it sure made me wonder.....hmmm? Could that have been on purpose?

How do you handle that? Warning? Something else?
