Assistant coaches have a lot of investment in the team. They should have a say. Lead Practice? Is this then to suggest that there isn't a practice plan? Lead games? Is he taking the 3rd base coaching box and telling the head coach to take a hike? Is he telling the kids to do anything against what the head coach has told them or is telling them? Bad Spot? Any Head Coach that is worth his salt will not allow any player, coach, parent, ... to disrupt the team and their goals on any given day or game. That is why they are the Head Coach. That is also why, when things like this happen, they get fired. JMHO!
As I have assisted many times I have always asked what is expected of me and how I can help the coach to build a better program. The word Manager should be just that. He selects, deligates, and oversees the team, but should look to assistants to teach and prepare as well. I have always stepped up and taught during practices, but I always use the term "WE" when explainng a system or approach, that way we all appear to be on the same page. The coach always knew in advance what I was teaching and how to go about it. It should never be a competition between coaches. I have worked for one supreme commander, who only wanted control of everybody and everything. That didn't last for me. The kids need to have confidence in all coaches that they are getting good instruction and if they have a question about the game, they can go to any coach.
A lot of how the assistants act has to do with the head coach. With our guys, we talk about areas where I want them to be very vocal and to run areas that they are assigned to do (pitching coach, hitting coach, etc.). We also talk about times when they need to play a more "in the background" role so that I can do MY thing. I empower my coaches to be active and to get involved as much as possible because they put the time in during the off-season to know the kids and the goals of the program.
