These are 2 pretty easy, straightforward questions ... but my brain is failing me at the moment.

1. In a rundown which results in the baserunner being out, if an infielder touches the ball 3 times during the play, does that fielder get credited with 3 assists?

2. Batter reaches base on a fielder's choice.
Statistically, does that count as an "on base" for the purposes of OBP?

Thanks!

Thanks for the reference to OBR 10.11 -- Very Interesting!

In part it says:
"An assist shall be credited to each fielder who throws or deflects a batted or thrown ball in such a way that a putout results, or would have resulted except for a subsequent error by any fielder."

I guess that means that on a routine ground ball where the runner is safe because the first baseman drops the ball, the fielder still gets an assist. I don't think I ever realized that.

10.11 goes on to say:
"Only one assist and no more shall be credited to each fielder who throws or deflects the ball in a run down play which results in a putout, or would have resulted in a putout, except for a subsequent error. NOTE: Mere ineffective contact with the ball shall not be considered an assist. "Deflect" shall mean to slow down or change the direction of the ball and thereby effectively assist in putting out a batter or runner. (a) …(b) … (c) …(d) Do not credit an assist to a fielder whose wild throw permits a runner to advance, even though the runner subsequently is put out as a result of continuous play. A play which follows a misplay (whether or not it is an error) is a new play, and the fielder making any misplay shall not be credited with an assist unless he takes part in the new play.

So based on that, tell me who gets how many assists on this play:

rundown between 2B & 3B
play goes 5-4-6-4
4 then makes throwing error
runner rounds 3rd & heads for home
runner is thrown our 5-2

Just curious to see if we agree. Thanks!

There’s no doubt that two people can look at the same thing and see something different. I looked at his 1st post and immediately connected the post with HSBBW and figured it was HS he was talking about. Then I read your 1st response and wondered why you were quoting OBR. Confused

I think a lot of the misunderstanding comes from most of us “newbies” not knowing what the other folk’s situation is, so I don’t get too **** about it other than to encourage everyone to make sure they give as much info as possible when they ask a question where someone would have to go to a rule book to get the answer.

Its just a good habit to get into.
