Usually (if not all of the time) if a coach has the word "Associate" in his title "Head Coach" follows.

You will see them listed as "Associate Head Coach".

I agree w/ what has been posted above. It is a way to reward an assistant coach or honor him w/ a more significant title. They are usually the Head Coach's Right-Hand Man and often times you will see these Associate Head Coaches get a Head Coaching job of their own. Either they will take over for the current Head Coach or move on to a new school.
