We have been to this a couple of times and intend to return at least once annually through my son's high school years. We love the coaches and the facilities, and obviously it's an up-and-coming program. This is one of my son's target schools, so we look for ways to get in front of the coaching staff and this camp has allowed us to do that very effectively.

That being said, the competition at the camps to date has not been terribly stiff. Invitations seem to be getting sent out to purchased lists and not to specific referrals. As interest in the program has grown, they have not pared down whom they're inviting, but rather, have increased the number of camp sessions offered. Thus, you should not read too much into the fact that they sent you an invitation.

These camps have multiple purposes: (1) to find a handful of kids to follow and possibly recruit; (2) to create more "buzz" about the program; and, candidly, (3) to provide a source of extra income for the assistants.

If you think your son has ACC potential and that he can also handle the UVA academic load, you would do well to come on down. You will love the program and where it's going, and if your son's a true prospect, he'll get some personal attention and get to know the coaches. I don't have a lot of experience with evaluating college coaches, but I have been strongly impressed with O'Connor and also with the pitching coach, Kuhn. The area also makes for a good family trip.

There were coaches from a couple of D-3's the last time we were there, but not many. I don't think the coaches really want to invite teams they view as their competitors to this kind of thing. I think Va. Wesleyan and Eastern Mennonite were there, maybe Hampden Sydney too. I do recall James Madison also being there once, and that's a pretty hot D-1 team in the CAA right now (though ODU seems to have cooled them off this weekend!). But you won't see many other D-1's in attendance.

Hope this helps.
Midlo,

Thanks for the feedback. They have the developmental camp and the HS elite prospect camp. What year is your boy? In reading your post I'm guessing he's young i.e. 8/9th grader.

Being a VA guy what do u know about Old Dominion and their camp? Son had also rec'd invite to the last ODU camp but unfortunately wasn't able to attend and thinking about maybe attending the next one. Thanks.
We'll (OK, really my son) be attending the "late" session (late July). He is an '08, is targeting UVA as one of his schools.
We went to watch a game (vs. Clemson) and were impressed with the campus and baseball facilities (at least what we were able to see).

A number of coaches/private instructors (one of them a former UVA player) have nothing but good things to say about Coach O'Connor.

We're looking forward to the camp.

I agree with what everyone has been saying. UVA is an awesome (literally) institution and has tremendous coaching. The three camps we were at were fabulous. We went to their spring, summer and fall camps my son liked it so much. I'd say you have to be in the top 5-10% of your class to make it there grades-wise. One thing that has really bugged my kid though, ok, it bugged me too but I'm over it, is that last fall my son had an outstanding camp there. He was raking, lighting up every pitcher he faced. In three games during the camp he was 6-11, 2 doubles, 4 RBI, 2 SB, and played great defense behind the plate. At the end of it all as we were saying our goodbyes he couldn't get any of the staff to even acknowledge him and the real ****** part of it was that the staff was too busy fawning all over these "stud" pitchers my son just got through hammering. Ah well. He's not bitter and neither am I, I just felt bad for him. I didn't even have a LifeSaver to give him as we walked to the car. Some of you older folks might remember that commercial! Wink
