“If I’m not back, it’s because I couldn’t control the decision that was made,” Garrido said. “But trails end, baby. They all end.”
Said Perrin, in a statement: “Augie and I met today and had a very good talk. I asked him to serve as my special assistant and he has graciously accepted. We both care deeply for The University of Texas and our baseball program. I am beyond appreciative of all that Augie has done for Texas baseball and want to celebrate those successes. I’m happy he’ll be continuing to work with me as a special assistant and looking forward to working with him in that role.”
Great coach, great run. UT is currently the 7th or 8th best college for playing baseball in Texas. Time for a change.
Spent the last couple of days in OKC watching the Big 12 tourney. Sorry to see Augie go but everyone knew it was coming if he didn't win the tournament. Hook em....
This was in the plan since last season and I admire the fact that they created a position for him. Thats how it should be done. They kept it quiet.

I think that they already planned on who it will be! I could be wrong, but then they may have misled recruits.
I've seen a lot of stuff that points to O'Sullivan. Didn't realize Florida gives very little support to baseball despite all of the CWS appearances.
Also rumors about them wanting Louisville coach, they already took their football coach.
I'm sure they will probably consider Associate Head Coach Skip Johnson. A lot of recruits believed he was next in line...

Texas insiders seem to be hinting at O'sullivan. Skip would like to stay on as pitching coach if he's not considered for head coach (I think the admin wants to go in a different direction) Heard talk of TCU coach but heard he's not being considered.

Certainly they've mentioned Kevin O'Sullivan (Florida) a few times during the Super Regionals and Regionals. Brian O'Connnor (UVA) was mentioned in our local (Virginia) newspaper, and he's stated he's not going anywhere. I know Louisville's Dan McDonnell just signed a long term extension using the Garrido situation as leverage (no doubt!).
Is it just me, or has the Texas job lost a lot of luster? When was the last time Texas baseball was truly relevant? Sure, Texas was the job to have in the 80s, 90's, early 00's (and it pays very well) but I think these ACC and SEC guys want to be their "own Auggie Garridos" unless something happens with their ADs that makes them want to leave. But from the outside looking in, it doesn't seem like O'Sullivan, O'Connor or McDonnell are unhappy. They've got a good gig for the most part. Florida's facilities need an upgrade, but they've got a new AD coming in Oct 2017. UVA is making some capital improvements to Davenport field. Possibly, Texas could get a more local big name from Texas A&M, TCU or Texas Tech but I'm sensing Texas is going to have to look harder in the Power Conferences or for a rising D1 mid-major coach with juice. Again, from the outside it looks like they are floating names for the sake of floating names. Maybe that is how the game is played, but that seems like a waste of everybody's time.
Just curious to see who is going to be the guy to follow a legend.
A webster here told me that Sully was the next HC. He announced last week that he is a Gator and will be returning to Florida.
Texans think they are better than anyone else. Someone is dropping names and its not fair to the kids from Texas or from the other programs.
They should have given Skip the job, he is familiar with the program, the players and the recruits.
TPM, It's UT alums that think they are better than they are, not Texans. Big difference between the two.
If UT poaches a big state U coach, it will be with money, not the allure of the job itself. Fifteen and twenty years ago, you would see kids all around wearing their burnt orange shirts around. I'm not sure I've seen one in years.

They have to hire someone with ties to Texas. Most of these coaches have established themselves where they have strong roots and compete in great conferences. Its like starting all over again, and big money isnt going to buy them.

For those not aware, Smith built the Miami of Ohio program, built the Indiana program, got them to the CWS and ranked for two years and moved on to Arizona Stare. He's an expert fund raiser and recruiter. When he left Indiana the team had perfect APR score.
They have gone "outside" of the UT base for the last basketball and football hire. But a UT connection makes sense. Big State, big school, big money. Just win something and the burnt orange will be a popular color again.
In the last couple of years, UT has hired new football coach Charlie Strong and basketball coach Shaka Smart. I saw in the news they were talking to UCLA's John Savage for baseball. What a marketing coup that would be...

Two years ago, Texas was in college world series. Then they extended garrido. I like Tracy smith, but timing wasn't right.

I think social media speculation forces coaches to say they are not interested. But many coaches of top programs may suddenly get a raise based on the same speculation.
See Saban's raises and the rumored UT football coach search of the last several years.
seems to be the trend, when texas has an opening, everyone makes sure their coach is happy. In the future they maybe have to be a little more coy, perhaps line up the replacement before they announce the opening. Although I believe Texas state rules dont allow for that at state universities. They have to post the job opening.

Strange timing on when this all went down. If you really were going to go after some of these big names announcement post CWS would have seemed the way to go.
After teams were done swoop in on your target and wine and dine him before his current employer could counter. This way you basically just let all the current employers get a leg up and lock their guys up.

The fact that we are discussing this during the College World Series makes this all the more interesting to me. Texas is a program looking for a second career. Over the last few years, they have been out recruited by Texas Tech, Texas A&M, TCU, Rice, Sam Houston State and the Univ of Houston. Should we add Baylor to that list too? Those are just the D1 programs I'm thinking of off the top of my head. Think of all those talented Texas recruits going to someplace other than Burnt Orange....it is mind numbing.
I agree with TPM, they have to recruit someone with strong local ties to win these recruits back. But I also think that person has to have a national presence to get top national recruits that add something to the program. This is not going to be easy. In some ways replacing Augie Garrido is going to be extremely difficult, and in other ways I think it is going to be rather easy. They need someone with turnaround skills. One strategy could be to bring in the turnaround HC to hand it off to someone with a bigger HC profile that could get them back to CWS. Just a thought or two on the topic.
