Their shortstop is from my sons high school and he loves it. Austin College is an excellent liberal arts college - highly ranked. Baseball wise they play D3 ball in same conference with powerhouse Trinity and hold their own. Year before last they won the conference tournament and went to the World Series. Their head coach, Carl Iwasaki is outstanding and very highly thought of in the coaching community.
Natural, just some slight clarifications.
Austin won the SCAC tournament in 2007, but lost their first two games in the Regional and were eliminated.
With that said, their 2007 win surprised many, but also was a good reflection of the improvement in their program.
I am not sure they are yet to the level where they hold their own with Trinity based on 2008 results. That is not a criticism in any way.
Being in the same baseball division of the SCAC with Trinity, Millsaps and Southwestern means one very good team does not even make the conference tournament. It also means the team that survives that competition has a very good chance of doing well in any post season action.
mikamom, if your friend is a good CA player, he has a chance to play in a great conference with top academic DIII schools. There isn't anything like it in CA. I would encourage him to give Austin or any other SCAC program a very close look.
