At his school baseball banquet earlier this month, my son won a most coveted award:

"Most likely to arrive at BP wearing camo because he's been out hunting gobblers."

(He's never actually done that, but he would if he could!)

<--- the little guy at the left is actually talking on the phone, but it sure looks like a hunting bow to me!

Our HS award MVP , Highest Batting Average , Defensive POY , Coaches Award. Im not much on individual awards. We do it because we are told to do it by the AD. If it were up to me there would be no individual awards only team awards. I would use the money spent on the individual awards and buy all the kids a trophy and a framed team picture.
At my high school there were three awards:

1. Coaches Award
2. Most Improved
3. MVP

As a freshman I earned the coaches award for taking the most **** from the coach and not quitting. By the way coaches, if you no longer LOVE coaching baseball, please quit rather than taking it out on your players.....do I sound bitter? Yes, but I'm over it. At the time it was torture for me.

At my brothers HS I think they give out the same awards.
Our Banquet is tonight. We don't give out any awards. I once remember a team (not one of my teams) where the MVP was selected by the kids and so, the coaching staff didn't agree and changed the recipient of the award to the player they thought should win. (I know this because I know the winner of the award well and he knows how everyone voted and that he didn't win it on player votes.) It just seems like there are too many hard feelings or opportunities to destroy what I've wanted to build.

Back to what we do. We give out a "Certificate" for participation, a letter to those that have earned it, "bars" to those that have already lettered. Since I serve on some other committees, I can state at our banquet those players that I have that have received awards to this point from area interest such as the Metro East Baseball Coaches Association (I have 2 1st teams) for that award. The coaches of our conference have voted All-Conference and so, I'll also award those certificates.

One more observations on Awards. My High School Coach, Norris Dorsey, once told me that at a banquet every kid is the star. Make sure of it! Pretty good advice!
This might be a little off topic but I will go ahead anyway. As I stated previously we do have awards. And we are told me will give out these awards by the AD. The biggest reason Im not big on individual awards at the Team Banquet is this. Kids all work hard all year long. They win as a team and they lose as a team. You spend the entire year telling them they are all equally important to the teams sucess and equally important to you as a coach. You are there to celebrate the season and the accomplishments of the team. And then it ends up being about 3 or 4 players. I try very hard to make it about our seniors. I try very hard to recognize all the players regardless of how much or little they contributed during the games. Of course we have kids make all conference and all state. But these awards are given out by the conference or the NCHSSAA not us. To all coaches. Make sure the banquet does not end up being about the two or three studs on the team but about all the players that have equally sacrificed for the team all your long. jmho
Our HS gives a "Rookie of the Year", "Coach's Award" and MVP (voted by players)

Travel team gives no individual awards, but one of the moms compiles a collection of things over the season (tournament fliers, brackets, team and individual photographs, ticket stubbs, etc.) and puts together a personal scrapbook for each player for the end of season in the Fall. It has been my son's favorite keepsake each year--much more than game balls and trophies when he was younger.

I commend that mom. It is a labor of love!
