The list of players invited to tryout for the Academic Game has been posted and my 2017 was lucky enough to make the initial cut.  It looks like the number of players is quite higher than last year.  Last year the total # of participants was 103.  This year the # is upwards of 160.

Approx. 37 outfielders selected.  Anyone know how many kids ended up on each team last year after the tryouts?  Just wondering if 2017 has a statistical prayer of being selected.

Sorry to be so clueless, but is this different than the Arizona Junior Fall Classic (and Sophomore Fall Classic, etc.)? Is it sort of like a Stanford camp (that is, high academic) but a game rather than a camp or showcase? Do they only do it for juniors?

This isn't applicable to 2019Son this year. Just trying to learn more. Thanks,

The academic games are the same thursday as the Classic. You must be a Junior for the week of Jr fall classic or Senior the week of the SR classic.  You have to have an unweighted GPA of 3.7 or above, ACT >27, or SAT >1700 to even try out as an individual, combine style.  Then, a game is played that evening for the players that make the final cut.  Players also have to be uncommitted at that point to qualify.  This gives the schools a look at a group of players that are academically good to go and if their baseball skills and other attributes are to their liking, this can give schools a chance to see kids that are available, without commitment or grade hurdles.

Got it, thanks. Makes sense for the schools and for the kids.

2019 dad...good that you'r starting early!  I've found with my 2017 that there's a lot of options, opportunities, paths, deadends.  You've been really active on this site so you probably know more than I do.  I would only clarify sun walking's comment by emphasizing the process getting into the TRYOUT for the academic game is a bit mysterious.  They want kids with the requisite scores and grades and baseball talent, but I don;t know how they determine the latter.  The academic stuff is pretty clear but I'm not aware of how they may have determined my son's baseball ability.  You better believe I'm grateful he's getting a tryout though.  It's a good crowd to be in front of.  Here's last year's group of schools attending the Jr. Classic:

As has been mentioned on threads here before, there's not a lot going on during the tryout so coaches will get a good look at the invitees (theoretically) AND if you get the bonus prize of playing in the actual game that night it's pretty much the only thing happening on the Classic schedule.

Another thought: my son happens to be going with a travel team to the classic but my understanding is that you can apply for it independently.  If you are selected for the tryout you can try to hook up with a team AT the classic.  This is important because they open up the applications for the academic tryouts well before many teams have finalized their rosters for summer and fall (I think in March) and the earlier you can apply for the tryout, I think the better.  Not a guarantee, but certainly demonstrates interest.  Also, if you don't get selected for the tryout you get your fee back, so it's a really a no brainer (as long as a kid has some brains)

congrats, Sun!  Good luck to your son, too.  I'll pm you later.  Im curious about your son's club/travel team background.  Wondering if our boys have played against each other along the way.  Is he going with a team to Az?

The Junior Academic game was great last year. My 2016 was an outfielder that made the final cut.  Very well scouted game.  Many more coaches watching that game than the other games he played while at the general event.  I believe there were around 6 outfielders on each of the two teams if I'm remembering correctly.  I do recall my son had three at bats that game. Good luck.
