I am looking for some help for my 15 year old son. During the summer he began experiening "stiffness" in the front side of his lower back while pitching. He shut down for a while, but while throwing this fall he is still having the same problem. He definately lacks overall flexibility as well as having a growth spurt over the last year, going from 5"10" to 6"3". Are there any specific workouts he could be doing to help? Any guidence or suggestions would be very much apprieciated.

welcome to hsbbweb birdman ...

there have been some discussions on your question in the past that may do you some good .. I'll try to find them & provide a link

lower back pain

that growth spurt may be a contributing factor

regarding seeking medical advice, if you can get a referral to a good "sports otho guy" you can save a few steps - a trip to a family doctor or non-sports otho MD will likely be frustrating.

from our experience even the "sports ortho" leans on rest & PT (therapy), before dropping $2000 on an MRI for "stiffness", but not always as an MRI can eliminate guesswork and eliminate wasted time

good luck

btw, exactly where is the "front side of the back"??

There are a lot of good stetching exercises your son can do, and this may sound a bit out of left field, find a good yoga class and have him take the class a few times. There is a good book called "Real men do yoga" with a lot of pro atheltes talking about the benefits of the yoga program they are do. Alan Jager and Joel Zumala claim that doing yoga added 5 mph to Z's fazt ball. Youga involves a lot of stretching and will help his flexibilty and suprisingly also has a lot of "strength" work. For examples, everyone talks about planks to sterngthen your core, that's a yoga exercise. Once he improves his flexibilty, get him into a pilates class, and make sure he does the thrower's 10 exercises. If you google throwers ten, you find information on those exercises.
Went to orthopedic doctor today and X-ray was negative. He had us a schedule a MRI to rule out "repetitive motion spondylolysis." Doc said he had 2 other baseball pitchers that he saw this summer with spondylolysis, and wanted definatively rule it out. Hopefully that is the case. Again, thank you all for your advise.
