Learned something new today...

My guy has been instructed to start his swing with his Back shoulder, driving his back shoulder to the location where his front shoulder once was.

Opening up too soon with his front shoulder has been a problem for my son, robbing him of some power and causing him to miss hit some inside pitches.

With the emphisis on driving his back shoulder, I can visualize the additional power and bat speed that will be creating.

This is not meant to be a discussion as to what part of the body moves first, just a discussion on the importance of driving the back shoulder, adding power to the swing.

The Journey Continues!

I think it's a great cue....if your goal is to push the bat with brute strength. Other wise, I'd say no!
Well I know my guy is NOT afraid of the ball Wink.

And I know my guy does not "Push" the bat. Heck he hit .458 with 28 extra base hits!

This is just an adjustment being made by the same instructor that has gotten him this far to prepare him for a 92MPH FB followed by an 86MPH Slider.

I know that it is an excellent adjustment. His power has traditionally been to Right Center and has not always turned on the inside pitch as well as we would like. This adjustment is being made to correct that defect in his swing.

He had a little workout yesterday and hit 6 over Left to left center, into a strong headwind. His shots to center and right center were hung up by the wind. Typically he would have hit gap to gap with a tendency to the opposite field. So to see him get his pullside going was a good sign.

I suppose if you see players that have a tendency to pull and have their power on the pull side then this adjustment may not be appropriate.

Tell him why not if you don't agree.

I concur as does my son's long time Hitting pro. Additionally, its how one generates speed throwing a rear punch, hitting a forehand or striking a baseball; the rear foot, knee, hip, shoulder and hands, in rapid order, fire towards the target.

It's a bit of a hurdle for those use to timing with the hands and throwing the barrel.

Good luck.

After his response, why should I? It appears he likes it and thinks it's a good thing. Good luck to him.
That is precisely the movement that my guy is working on to perfect. His front would open prematurely and rob him of quickness that caused him to miss hit pitches he otherwise would drive, or should be driving.

You know that many are taught to bring the back shoulder to where the front shoulder was to encourage full rotation. But it is amazing the difference in power if you start that movement with the front shoulder as opposed to the rear shoulder.

I believe that when you hear cues like "pulling off a pitch" it may be indicative of the front shoulder opening up too soon.

I like the analogy of how a boxer uses his back shoulder to drive a punch.

This is a good example and one reason I like using the medicine ball with my son.He will take the ball and set it on his shoulder. He will get in his batting stance and quickly rotate his body while shot putting the ball forward as far as possible.Kind of like a punch, but locking out the front side in the process.
