LA is the man, one of the best kept baseball secrets! The man has never had a job outside of baseball, he knows virtually nothing but baseball, he is personable, he is a legend among guys who attend the old-timers fantasy camps in the winter...just a true American classic!!

Some of his best work on the radio is in times like this when the Phillies product is so terrible that you can't talk about it for 9 innings...LA goes off in story telling mode. Locker room stories, bullpen stories, bar stories, late night stories.

Awesome stuff

Nola has been good when he wasn't injured. crawford is still a top10 prospect although some scouts think that he can't hit.

generally they went mostly with HS guys and those guys bust way more often (but also become superstars more often).

but overall the phillies rebuild hasn't been great. considering how long they have been tanking now the results of the farm were not great. I think they went too much with tools and youth and ignoring polish, a lot of hackers in that system.

other teams that started later with their rebuild have overtaken the phillies but to be fair most of those teams had guys to trade while the phillies just had cole hamels as a significant trade chip. that means their job was harder but still the brewers or even the padres have achieved more in a shorter time.

the phillies have depth in the minors but almost all of their guys have warts and there are no real great blue chip prospects like kris bryant who did nothing but rake.

The Phillies are merging with the Sixers. Trust "The Process." I don't know why Philadelphia fans are complaining. The city has a championship in the past twenty-three years. If Philadelphia teams weren't such losers talk radio wouldn't be so amusing.

My kids grew up with all the sports packages so I could watch the Boston teams. But I allowed them to be Philadelphia fans. My son is thinking of having me charged with child abuse for allowing them to be Philadelphia fans.

ok RJM that is amusing...it is civic badge of honor around here! you know 4-4 but who knows why?? I actually just don't care about the Sixers or the Flyers very much unless they are good, I guess I am 2-4 and a part-timer on the others.

Agree 100% with that. Greene was perfect example of that approach.

I once had a "Want to get away?" moment watching an Eagles game in a bar. I had lived in LA for years before Philadelphia. I had Rams season tickets before they moved. I was a fan. It just wasn't as important as the Patriots.

It was the Eagles-Rams NFC championship. I stayed quiet for health and safety reasons all game. I only smiled when good things happened. When the Eagles turned the ball over in the last minute I launched off my bar stool, fist in the air with a very loud "YES!."

The entire bar turned and looked at me. The father of the woman I was dating did not allow me in his house for over a month.**

** Anyone who has never lived in Philadelphia could never understand how emotional Eagles fans can be. It's beyond any emotions in the  Red Sox-Yankees rivalry. The Monday talk shows are pure comedy (if you're not an Eagles fan) after a loss.

I was an Eagles season ticket holder for 10 years until my sons started playing ball. I understand, I was at wing bowl from the first year they moved to the old spectrum till they started selling tickets, my father and I went together for several years! I booed Michael Irvin and felt good about it (we didn't know it was a carrier ending injury at the time...but it may not have mattered) I was there for the snow ball game in Vet for playoffs, I was there watching joe freakin jeravcious run away with our super bowl in the NCF championship game, I was there for opening night of the LINC, I was there for 4th & 26th, I was there when we finally made beat Atlanta for the NFC crown and I was at Jacksonville for McNabb to puke but Eagles fans OWNED Jacksonville that week...oh buddy I can tell you some stories about the Eagles, the pain and suffering, the tailgates in FDR park, about watching my 5 year old son pee on a tree on Broad St walking out of the Linc and back to the park....his mother was horrified but dad was proud!!

It has a few warts but Philly is a great town!

Know some folks from Charlotte who attended the NFC Championship game in Philly in '03. Wore their Carolina gear and were spit on and had beer thrown on them.

And I had a work colleague who was a big Cowboys fan and went to the Cowboys-Eagles game in Philly every year and never had any problems.

Worst physical violence I've seen at a sporting event was an opening night Dodgers-Giants game at Candlestick Park, though that particular game as not as bad as the Dodgers fan who got murdered right outside AT&T Park (www.usatoday.com/story/sports/...than-denver/2880721/) or Bryan Stow's brutal beating. Or any Raiders game, ever.

When you have season tickets you become friends with fans around you. About twenty of us decided to go to the LA Rams at LA Raiders game. The Rams were winning in the fourth quarter. A Raiders fan about 6'4" 300 with about six teeth (typical Raider fan) stood in front of us and said, "If the bleepn Rams beat the bleepn Raiders in this bleepn game I'm going to beat the bleepn bleep out of each and every one of you bleepers." Then we walked out of the Coliseum and hoped our cars weren't broken into or stolen.

it was amazing what the city did to the area during the 1984 Olympics. People from out of town couldn't believe it was the ghetto.

I don't know that this is funny, but it is remarkable: http://phillysportshistory.com/tag/alice-roth/

I used to love listening to Ashburn on the radio when he did play-by-play (rather than his usual color commentary) -- he say, completely deadpan, things like "first pitch is a fastball right down the middle for ball one."

If you ever heard Tim McCarver say someone looked "runnerish" he got that from Whitey. My father and brother and I still like to say "hard to believe, Harry" when something is, well, hard to believe.

I remember as kid being able to walk to the beach in Ocean City for blocks at a time and listen to Harry and Whitey on the radio...just blanket after blanket had the game on. Life before ear buds!

"Hard to believe Harry" still gets used regularly by anyone who grew up in the 70's or 80's as Phillies fans.

"Harry I will bet you dinner he runs on this pitch" is another Whitey line I will never forget.

Scott kingery has been really good, 17 HR already and he is also a good defender at second and a plus runner. Also makes a decent anount of contact.

Of course reading where he plays is an absolute launching pad but still interesting.

Reading is known as a launching pad, but Kingery has interesting splits this year:

  • Home:  .305/.376/.648  9 HR
  • Away:  .315/.398/.631  8 HR

In Kingery's case, it doesn't look like a Reading effect.

Philadelphia currently has a Grand Slam going. None of the last four seasons teams made the playoffs. I'm in the area right now. A couple of days ago I got in my car at 2pm. I turned on Mike Missanelli wondering what the hell he can discuss to hold an audience. The topic for the day was, "Pick your team. Whose fault is it? How would you fix it?"

Some of the calls were absurd ...

... Overpay to sign Bryce Harper when he becomes a free agent.

Why would he sign with a loser without much hope in he near future? One stud isn't going to make them a winner.

... Trade Okafor and a couple of #1s for Devin Booker.

Why would the Suns trade a young stud to pick two 19yos? No one wants Okafor for more than a couple of used towels.

... Sign LeVeon Bell when he becomes a free agent after 2017.

As if the Steelers would allow their best young player to walk away.

But all is not lost. The Sox come to town next week.

If you listen to Mike Missanelli you will hear some of the dumbest things in the world said and that is before he starts taking calls. From there it tends to go downhill!

There's been a lot of change since I moved away six years ago. Missanelli is a familiar name. I didn't listen to him when I lived here. Or the Burger King/Howard Eskin. The biggest moron was Angelo Cataldi.

When I first moved here in '93 I liked Mac & Mac (Glen Macnow and Jody McDonald). Anthony Gargano is good. But his hyper personality can be overwhelming.

I'm not a big fan of sports talk radio. I believe it can make you stupid. After six years in Boston, even though it's the home town teams II haven't listened enough to determine who is good. I can tell you who's bad. Most of them.

The only guy I ever listened to who was genuinely good was Hacksaw Hamilton in southern CA. His key to a quality show? Almost no callers. Most callers are stupid and grossly biased. Just know your stuff and provide it to the audience.

I only listen to sports talk when I'm in Philadelphia because the fans are psychotic. It's entertaining.
