Today we had a pitcher balk by throwing to an unoccupied base. The situation was one out and runners on 1B and 2B, the batters squared and the third baseman charged leaving 3B unoccupied. Both runners took off. The pitcher threw to 3B and the ball went down the LF line. The umps called a dead ball; even though, no one was in possession of the ball and the runners were advancing. Each runner got one base to stop at 2B and 3B. Is this a correct call? How can this be a dead ball?
