and in OBR and NCAA the ball remains alive until the pitch/play is concluded. At the end of the following action if the batter and all runners advanced at least one base from the TOP then all action stands (including any outs that occur beyond the would-be awarded base[s]) and the balk call is ignored. But, if the batter or any runner does not safely advance at least one base then the ball becomes dead and the balk penalty is applied.

Basically, NFHS its immediately dead and NCAA/OBR it is conditionally dead.
