Bases loaded, two outs.

Batter hits a hard ground ball that hits off the field umpire's foot. Third baseman fields the deflected ball and throws the batter out at first.

Fielding team believes the inning is over.

Field umpire says it's a dead ball, batter is awarded first, and all runners advance, scoring one.

Can anyone tell us if that is the correct call? Coach appealed to the home place umpire who did not reverse it.

Thanks very much.

If it didn't pass an infielder other than the pitcher, which is what it sounds like, this is the correct call. Dead ball, BR gets first, runners advance if forced.

I will never understand coaches going to the non-calling umpire with their questions.

B/c they don't know the protocol. Another reason why I don't waste my breath telling them this at the plate meeting like so many I know do. If they don't already know, they are not going to do it in the first place.

They think the PU is the one who knows all b/c he put on the equipment. Little do they realize the PU may be the weaker one of all the umpires on the field.

Thanks so much! When parents were wondering and the coach disagreed with the call, we knew we could easily find the correct answer here.

Outstanding! so glad that is the case.......

As Im sure most know, ALL the umpires here that answer these questions are volunteers........and MST and I are very grateful to have umpires of this quality and experience be a resource to anyone seeking information on rules, mechanics and the proper practice of umpiring.......
