Ball in uniform

While watching the cubs vs astros game, the pitcher had the ball enter his uniform, fumbled trying to find it and the batter ended up on first base. End of story. But then my son posed a quite interesting question.

What happens if there is a runner on second base, theoretically, and there is a drop 3rd strike and the runner starts running to first after swinging and missing. The ball bounces and enters the umpire's ball bag. Runners would keep running as the catcher looks dumbfounded. What is the ruling??

Ball is dead. Runner on second is awarded third. Batter-runner is awarded first.
