So on my sons HS team -Players including pitchers do no band work. They also do not bullpen. Mid size high school 1300 in central us.

I never talk to coaches during season which has about a month left but feel like I should address this as a concern going forward after the season ends. My son 2019 is a recruit and has interest from some D2 and jucos  I am worried about both development and arm care.

He is working his band program and bullpening on his own but behind the coaches backs because they want to control all baseball activities which I get but they have no plan in place.

Am I overreacting here.  I don’t want to complain but would be interested to hear from the board and hopefully some of our coaches  to get your perspective

Is there a reason why no bullpens between starts?  Do they do flatgrounds?  My guys do a 15 to 20 pitch flatground the day before they start as well as a 20 to 30 pitch bullpen about 3 maybe 2 days before they pitch around 85% effort focusing on mechanics and location.

Anyway this doesn't sound good and it's good your son is doing this on his own.  My advice is have your son speak to the coaches and have him tell them he feels better / stronger if he gets a mid start bullpen.  You shouldn't have to speak to the coaches but you can help your son figure out what to say.

Keep up the side bullpens and he should be fine in staying sharp and healthy as long as he's not overdoing it.

!00% correct regarding info in 1st paragraph

As stated in first response. Have your son handle this on his own first. Have him ask coach if he can meet with him for 5 minutes before/after practice to discuss band work and bullpens. Glad to hear he is doing these things on his own. There is no way a high school baseball program should be operating this way with all of the current, widely available knowledge regarding arm care/maintenance. These guys are living in the dark ages!
