Would be interested to know how any of the umpires plan to handle the new HS bat regulations.

Our state is under the national rule and most players and parents do not understand the difference. Such as Composite is banned unless BBCOR or certified legal BESR.

As an umpire will you bring a list to the game? At my sons last hitting session kids from different HS teams are certain that their Stealth Speed 75 a full composite is legal. I have seen that this bat is illegal on most lists.

I am sure a kid will come to the plate with an illegal bat.

Will the umpires police this? If not will the opposing coach need to protest? Once there is a prostest will the umpires refer to a list they have on hand? How will this be handled? will be very interesting.

This is a safety rule so the umpire should pull the bat (in pregame inspection) or as soon as it is found and any penalties should be assessed if during the game. If not caught by the umpire and the coach appeals the bat and it is found illegal it should be taken out of the game and penalties assessed.

There are 3 websites you need to look at:

First is the NFHS Rules - Compliant Bats... http://www.nfhs.org/Workarea/D...adAsset.aspx?id=4492

Second is the list of approved composite bats... http://www.nfhs.org/content.aspx?id=4155

Third is the LOOOOONNNNGGGG Master list of approved bats...
http://www.mme.wsu.edu/~ssl/ce.../besr/certified.html

Finally the rule is about the barrel being composite (not the handle) and the Easton Stealth Speed 75 is illegal. Matter of fact Easton has NO BESR composite bats that are found on the legal list. These are listed as ABI bats on the big (third) site.

ALL BBCOR bats are legal

Here in AZ, the umpires (through four games) have simply been looking at each bat for either a BBCOR or BESR stamp.

Since all of our bats (and those of our opponents so far) have all had the appropriate markings, we've had no issues.

Our district has a rule requiring "new batting helmets be used this year." They appear to be on a concussion kick (good for them - no complaints on that issue).

The problem is the definition of "new". Us parents found out late, so we ordered on the coach's web site and the order isn't in yet. The team bought six and the boys have been sharing them. After four games, the definition of "new" becomes a little cloudy. No issues yet, but we're getting funnier looks every day...

Something that has been used once isn't new anymore. I guess you'll need to buy a new helmet for each at-bat to be in compliance.
I had a rules meeting with the league's head umpire yesterday. He is instructing all of the league teams to print out the 42 page list and highlight every model of bat that we will have on our bat rack. He said that each umpiring crew would also have the list to cross reference. This is not a big deal for me becuase we only use two brands of bats so it shouldn't take too long to get inspected. I could see this being a mess for a big school were every kid on the team has a bat. Our non league games are going to be interesting as well because this is not a state wide practice each league or area will have it's own way of doing it.
The only way to deal with the bat issue (IMHO) is to look at a rating, whatever the locals decide is required.

If it has it, GOOD, if not BAD. Otherwise, you guys are looking up DH789R62,496 and asking if that's legal. Fortunately, we aren't going there "yet".

The helmet thing is a bit of a cluster. I understand the concerns about concussions and believe me, I don't want to see yong men suffering concussion injuries, ever.

But how do you tell if a helmet has become "concussion compromised" based on the paint chipping? I wouldn't leave this to an umpire any more than I would to a NASA scientist with a PhD (although the umpire would give me a ruling long before the PhD would).

I think they should look at the inside of the helmet and see if all the padding is still there and then see if there are cracks on the outside. I don't think they've figured all that out just yet, however.
