I just finished Crazy '08: How a Cast of Cranks, Rogues, Boneheads, and Magnates Created the Greatest Year in Baseball History by Cait Murphy and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It is a well written account of the 1908 season and how the Merkle game influenced the season's climax. I thought the author brought a lot of depth to the characters by researching and presenting facts before and after 1908 and also hepled put that season in perspective to today's game.

I am currently reading The Big Bam: The Life and Times of Babe Ruth. Another good read. All is not as it seemed.

I felt really good after reading The Soul of Baseball: A Road Trip Through Buck O'Neil's America. Buck O'Neil, what a guy!

I liked some of the ones mentioned above too ("The Last Best League" is a really good one). I also tend to enjoy biographies of some of the great players. Two of my favorites that have been out for 3-5 years:

"Sandy Koufax, A Lefty's Legacy" by Jane Leavy was very good.

I'm halfway through "Joe DiMaggio, The Hero's Life" by Richard Cramer. Its not terribly flattering of Joe D. off the field however it has greatly enhanced my appreciation for his on-field talents.

Kahn, Roger. The Head Game: Baseball Seen From The Pitcher’s Mound. New York: Harcourt, 2000

Roger Kahn is always a good read. This is a must read, lots of history and perspectives.

Two great “bathroom books”;

Liebman, Glen. Baseball Shorts: 1,000 Of The Game’s Funniest One-Liners. Chicago: Contemporary Books, 1994

Voorhees, Randy, and Mark Gola. As Koufax Said…: The 400 Best Things Ever Said About How To Play Baseball. Chicago: Contemporary Books, 2003

I read Jane Leavy’s book about Koufax and will “second” justbaseball; very good book about one of the greatest pitchers of all time.
