What are your favourite baseball books for interesting reading? (not technical books) Can anyone review some of the books that have come out this year?
I just finished Crazy '08: How a Cast of Cranks, Rogues, Boneheads, and Magnates Created the Greatest Year in Baseball History by Cait Murphy and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It is a well written account of the 1908 season and how the Merkle game influenced the season's climax. I thought the author brought a lot of depth to the characters by researching and presenting facts before and after 1908 and also hepled put that season in perspective to today's game.
I liked some of the ones mentioned above too ("The Last Best League" is a really good one). I also tend to enjoy biographies of some of the great players. Two of my favorites that have been out for 3-5 years:
"Sandy Koufax, A Lefty's Legacy" by Jane Leavy was very good.
I'm halfway through "Joe DiMaggio, The Hero's Life" by Richard Cramer. Its not terribly flattering of Joe D. off the field however it has greatly enhanced my appreciation for his on-field talents.
I am preferential to "Good enough to Dream" by Roger Kahn and "Ball Four" by Bouton, the last best league was a good one so was "Slider" by patrick robinson.
I really enjoyed Senior Year: a Father, a Son and High School Baseball by Dan Shaughnessy. Its a chronicle of the ups and downs of senior year - with lots of baseball and the emotional ride of recruiting and deciding on a college
Just started reading "Harvard Boys" written by Rick and John Wolff. It's the story of John's first minor league season while his dad interjects about his experiences 30 years earlier.
Rick is a former teammate so it's really kind of fun to read especially knowing both father and son and their passion for the game.
