Our son did the BF route last year. He made Team One Southeast and a variety of other events as well as pre-season All American. We also did a variety of other camps, and showcases. Now that we are near the end of the process here's my take.
BF is primarily about making money. No big shocker there, but other for profit baseball organizations are more concerned with placing kids. BF's tryouts and evals got my son noticed by a nationally ranked summer team. So that part was good. Their events were all run in a first class manner. Everyone who goes to the tournaments has a blast.
Team One was a major disappointment. They had half the scouts they said they would. Almost all of them were d3, NAIA, with a smattering of Juco's and D1's. My son had a great time at the Arizona showcase over the summer. But it was super expensive and we would not do it again.
Once BF realized they would not be getting anymore of our money, they took zero interest in my son, which tells me they are all about the money. Conversely, Perfect Game has shown repeated interest even though he never went to a showcase, but did attend their 17u WWBA event.
So, if we had it to do all over, I would do this: spend the money on the PG showcase. It is far more respected--I've been told that by several pro and college scouts. That will help give you a realistic picture of where your son should play. I would send him to a TPX showcase or prospect wire one.
I would try like heck to get on a summer team that is well respected and plays at the big events on the East or the West coast (Clemson Invitational, UNC invitational, 17u WWBA at East Cobb, for example). By far, that is the best way to be seen. Keep in mind, your son must perform at these events. None of this matters if he lays an egg.
As far as getting your son's name out there, once you have solid independent evaluations of your son's ability SAS--student Athlete Showcase--did an outstanding job. Unlike BF's service, they do all the mail out grunt work that is enormously confusing and enormously time consuming for all of us. After using them, we ended up with over 100 solid college contacts and numerous offers. A friend of ours used them for their daughter who plays volleyball and she's received more interest than she knows what to do with.
However, they only work with what your player is, not what you wish he would be or think he is. They perform a vastly superior service for the same cost that BF charges to give you advice.
It's probably more than you wanted to know, hope this helps.
