I was wondering what others thought of the recent conditions at Baseball Heaven. This was our 4th trip there last weekend and it was the most disappointing. The rain is out of their control so I can't complain about that but the things that bothered me the most were:

- Two of the four 90' diamonds now having temporary mounds which the pitchers would fall off a cliff if they tried any pickoff move. Also, the steepness of the decline seemed too much and made the footing very difficult, especially in wet conditions.

- Prior to the rain conditions last weekend, our team was slated to play 1 of our 3 games at an offsite field. From the google map it looked like it was a dirt infield field at a local community field. I find it disappointing that they are trying to squeeze so many teams in that they are now scheduling games offsite at what look to be sub-par fields especially since the cost for their tournaments is so much more than others due to the fact that the fields are supposed to be pristine turf fields.
(Note that when the rain was forecast they moved all games back to Baseball Heaven for our age division but postponed the 10's and 11's til this weekend. Worked fine for us but...I would have been unhappy if we were an 11yo team with hotel reservations and travel plans)

- The field itself was very uneven. With the turf fields, I believe there is a machine that can be used to smooth out the rubber fill. Unfortunately it didn't look like this had been done this year because the fields were not even.

Just so it isn't all negative, they were better at communicating status during the rain situations than previous years. Our coach received personal calls and email notifications when delays occurred. They were also accommodating of special requests which is always difficult to handle. So on the personnel side, they seemed to be better than previous years. I know some teams played very late which is difficult but when traveling to a tournament in those conditions, I would rather play a late game than not so I can't complain about that. I know that upset some parents but there is not much that can be done when there are weather delays.

I guess they are probably trying to cater to the 12&under age groups more since that is probably more of the demand and I understand they are trying to make money but these recent changes will stop our group from returning.

Were others there last weekend and what did they think?

I have to agree with tcclubs I too was dissapointed with my recent trip to Baseball Heaven. Right from the schedule (13 hours between game start times) down to the eventual lack of awards and playoffs. The pro shop was closed, the awnings that protected spectators from rain were not up, and there were rolls of what appeared to be a low grade replacement turf just lying on the walk ways.

I noticed a lot of rocks, cigarette buts, and debris on the fields that could have easily been cleaned up prior to our arrival.

The managment didnt appear to have any back up plan for the rain that postponed some of the games. Our 14 year old team started a game at 11:30 p.m at night! It didn't get over until past 2:00 a.m.

The umpires were horrendous...even though we took advantage of a few bad calls..one of the umpire teams did not even know the infield fly rule.

Overall although we had a good time I would not recommend Baseball Heaven to anyone traveling more 2 hours. Not worth the trip.
Apparently there are two different situations between spring season and the summer/fall season---we have never had a problem in the fall (weplay in three events there)---one of my players told me that when they played there in the early summer the field conditions were totally different then when he was with us in the fall---not trying to protect the Baseball Heaven people, they are under new management this year, just stating what I know

It has always been worth the trip for us

I was down at Baseball Heaven last year this trip was my teams 4th in a three year period. I personally as a coach really enjoy this tournament, but this year was worse that aweful it was pathetic. Offsite games were originally scheduled. Why would I have my team pay $1,500 to travel down and play on a skin infield? Further I know that they can not control the weather but I feel that with running tournaments being the business that Baseball Heaven makes it's money that a contingency plan should be in place for such a weekend. And in no case should a game start at 11:30pm. After playing the 11:30pm game Baseball Heaven was going to push our team off to a 4:30pm start for what should have been a 10:00am start. The whole tournament was run poorly. The grounds were embarassing, the new ownership group needs to reevaluate their approach before they lose more teams, after talking to other coaches my disappointment was not exclusive.
It will be interesting to see how things progress. This is a facility that we've always looked forward to attending. Since it is a new ownership group maybe they are learning so I am eager to see how it progresses during the summer but the impressions so far have been on the negative side. I do agree that 2am game time finishes are crazy. It will also be interesting to see how they compare to some of the new facilities that are being built. Increased competition can be a good motivation factor. I heard of Hudson Park Baseball and I thought I read about another new facility as well but I don't remember the name.
