Baseball Nicknames

We had a coach with a great sense of humor. If we really needed a big hit and my son was up he would call him teddy bear. Son would get so mad he would just kill the ball.

My son's nickname is "Weggie". He has a coach that gives every player a nickname. Some are: Chummy, Shatner, Ballstein, Sticks, Soup, Bucky, all with stories that go with the name. Some of them very funny that only the people that were there when the name was given would understand.

A few years ago I PA'd my son's legion game. I assigned each player a nickname. "Now batting, G..... the Gapper". Or "Sure Out S....." Introduced one kid as "Nasty Shoes N.....". To this day, he looks at his shoes when he steps in the box. Had too much fun that day.

At one point in our son's baseball 'career', when he threw harder than anyone on the team, he was nicknamed Smoke. When the All Stars went to Williamsport, the league had jackets made for the boys and each had his nickname embroidered over the left chest area.

One player on the team was a real stickler for putting everything in his bag exactly the same way each and every time he got on or off the bench. The coach nicknamed him Granny ... and to this day, even when I see that now 6'3" buff 24 year old, all I can envision is a skinny little 'granny' putting his gear in his bag.

The one that stuck was POWDER. JT, Jr was the bat boy for the UNC Asheville team when he was 9 or 10 and coach gave him his own locker. One day he was changing and it was in early spring--He was a "tow-head" back then--and was so pale--one of the players called him "POWDER" (after the movie). It stuck for 3-4 years until we moved to VA. Now he's simply JT.

My son's summer team had a boy on it that all of a sudden was being called what sounded like "Patty" - then it became clearer that it was Potty.

The Players last name was Porter and he had hit a foul ball off an out house - Porter Potty....

Porter Potty... that's good!!!

A player on our HS arch rival was known to have stuck a crayon up his nose as small child. Our guys have called him "Crayola" for his entire career....

My son's nickname is Tumbleweed. Stealing second one day about half way down the line he just fell like he was shot and just tumbled into second. And he was safe.

Well I made a mistake and tried to give my son a cool nickname - this was around the time LT was a dominate players for the NY Giants. So I made sure his initial would be KT - cool right. Worked great until the day my daughter (younger) said she had a girlfriend at school with the same name - Katie

My son has a couple of easy nicknames that seem to have followed him through baseball, "Z", or "Zinker". However as a HS Freshman, the Juniors and Seniors gave him the nickname "Plinko". I think it is refernce to the "Price is Right" game show but I have no idea of the association to him, but he liked it, and still answers to it if someone knows of it. I think it gave him a sense of "comfort" and "belonging" at a time when he was the young kid playing on an old team.

Son's nickname was always the same as his garndfathers and mine "Merc". Then he went away to school and now is the only player from NY on the team. When we visited early in the fall we began hearing the upperclassmen calling him "Broadway"... Wife and I both thought it was neat..

I like that Broadway nickname. Hows your son adapting to us midwest "hicks" and "farmboys"?

Son's nickname is Binky, but only on the baseball team, otherwise he doesn't ahve one. The team picked nicknames that rhymed for all the starting players: Binky, Dinky, Inky, Stinky, Slinky, etc.

While I'm only working with 9's, we have one kid on the team we call Yao after Yao Ming. Funny part about it is he is by far the shortest kid onthe team.

My boy uses his now infamous initials T.O.

When he was younger they called him Big O and Meat.

3 years ago he went on a hot streak where he was hitting 3 or 4 HR's a week, so temporarily his nickname became more of a chant T. O. Over

When my son was 14, they had a 1st baseman that could hit the ball pretty hard, but he ran like he had a tractor tire tied to him that he was pulling around the bases. He hit several singles off the wall. They called him "Ichiro".

I thought it was a good time to bring this one back to the top. "Juice Box" is now just Stewie. But he does have a kid on his team whose nickname is Grimace.

When you have a last name like mine, Rizzi, all the guys got the same nickname as I had as a kid-- "Rizz" or "The Rizz"

Didnt realize how old this thread was when it was brought back.

I always called my son gravy, since he runs kind of slow. His number has always been "11" so guys have called him "Sticks".

On a dirtier note, we had a boy whose name was BJ. The boys started to call him "jobber" The moms loved that one.

Son is called "Abe" or "Tank".

"Atta Babe, Abe" he hears alot.

As for me...I was just called slow.lol

Funny...I had the nickname of "Amtrack" in HS, and it wasn't for my speed! In college, I was given the nickname of "Roy Hobbs", again, it wasn't for my hitting ability, pitcher only for me! lol

My son is simply known as "KD"...although, I'll admit it sounds too close to Katie at times!

When son was real young I called him public enemy, my daughter thought I was calling pudlick, so the name that stuck was Pud.

His teammates nick name was "Booty"

Had another kid we called Will E. Hitit on the team

My son got named Fire Dog (stop, drop and roll) in his first varsity season. He tripped over second base, rolled, popped up and hit stride again to third all in one motion. The player who was assigned to chase foul balls was named Bird Dog.

My daughter wore 16. Her nickname was Sweet. She had a travel teammate named Sweet Cakes or Cakes. The girl thought the urinal in the porta potty was a sink and the cake was soap. You should have seen the look on her face when the team reacted to her complaints of scratchy soap and she figured it out. She ran across two live games in a direct line to the ladies room and came back with arms scrubbed red up to her elbows.

Well, my last name is Long, and most of my nicknames are references to male anatomy. So I'll just let you imagine.

There's a warm and appropriate memory in this thread. For anyone new in the past year this was one the nicest people to ever grace this board.

Thanks for bringing this thread back up. JT's post on the first page almost made me cry. Its still very hard if you know what I mean.

My son's nickname is "snacks"

It seems he eats everyones snacks when he visits their rooms to hang out.

I've always called him "Double-A", for his first and middle initials. Teammates have called him "Big D". One super-league teammate's little brother couldn't say the "r" in his first name, so he and his sisters called him "Dew". That name stuck with the little ones and their moms.

The best one we had was a super-league teammate nicknamed after the Disney rabbit. While a base-runner on 1st, the opposing pitcher made a pick-off move. Our kid fell while trying to get back to 1st-base and ended up crawling back. His leg was bouncing just like Thumper's from the movie! Bounce, bounce, bounce...thump, thump, thump! Our assistant coach yelled out: "Way to go Thumper!" and the name stuck. He's now a pitcher for a rival HS, but he'll always be "Thumper" to us.

1st was bc big country as about 5 10 in LL and only lisented to contry music

2nd last name is manwarren freshman year jv coach started calling him man*****

3rd one got new head baseball varsity coach his shoph year and coach hated his nickname so he changed it to manny and that has stuck so far it dosent help he has his blond moment every now and then and when he really has a brain **** the team calls thoses "manny" isms

My son has bright blond hair.

I called him Butters (after the South Park Character) one day at the batting cage and the kids overheard it so now he gets called it all the time.

the oldest had a player on his team that wasn't well liked by the coach. coach nick named the player "mondays". son asked the coach why, coach say's "i never liked mondays".

Son's nickname is "Sugar T".

RJM and Coach May, we have lost some fine folks, haven't we. I was actually only thinking about the nicknames when I bumped this thread. But I am enjoying remembering them them in this way.

My son Sam's nickname is, "Sammy". Interestingly enough, 3 different coaches have started calling him this without knowing the others have named him this.

I have several nicknames... "Hey you", "Walk-around", "Gearup" or going through an airport security checkpoint, "Is that your bag?". I have several others my wife calls me, but I would prefer to keep that private...

My son used to have his initials "ZP" on all his gear. We were joking around about it one day and we started calling him "zippy". He is a catcher and not very zippy at the moment.

Yesterday I learned that Grimace's new nickname is Mittens. "Because he's just a big kitty."

And Stewie's new nickname is J-dizzle. Fo shizzle.

Another teammate is a D2 baseball commit who also plays basketball and football. He is known for his remarkably solid build. On Tuesday, as our team was pounding a district rival, he comes to the plate. The opposing catcher was overheard saying, "This can't be good. It's Hank the Tank."
