The ability to catch a ball is a very complex maneuver. The point of the study was not to figure out how to teach youngsters to catch a fly ball as coaches figured that out decades and decades ago

The point was to figure out the dynamics and models that describe "mathematically" how to catch a ball specifically and more generally how human depth perception works. I doubt there are many little league coaches out there who know how to generate the models.
And it is one of those things (catching a fly ball) that is taken for granted. I met a young man this weekend who was a prospect and all of the sudden couldn't catch a flyball. After tests it was determined that he had a benign brain tumor. He had successful brain surgery and is back on track. Great kid, wonderful family, fantastic story. Even catching a fly ball is a blessing and understanding the miracle that is the human brain should not be understated.
