In the past our program has been able to hit with the best of them but the next couple of classes coming thru are going to be offensively challenged. So as a staff, we have decided to really focus on "producing runs". Does any one have any good drills to help? Anything to do with running the bases, situation hitting, that type of stuff? I know I am year late but "ozzie ball" stuff. Thanks for your help.

We make baserunning a regular station in our BP quite frequently. Just put a group at 2b or 3b and have them read the ball off the bat and react. They just take a few hard strides and then get back in line at 2nd or 3rd... (they need to pay attention because some balls are flying around and they can get drilled if they aren't keeping their head turned toward plate when going back to their line).
As you do this you can coach the baserunners on your basic rules at 2nd (whatever cues you like to use: such as 'ball behind you go, ball in front wait')
And at 3rd you can go over whatever cues you like to use: we use terms like, 'contact' 'see it thru' 'don't be an out' etc.
The other baserunning drill we do with BP is that in each group when the batter takes his last cut he runs that ball out to first. Now the next hitter has 3 or 4 cuts (whatever you choose)to get him to 3rd; your baserunner is reading the ball and running his bases hard. If the hitter doesn't get him over there, he loses a couple of swings next time... or whatever you decide...
the kids handle these pretty well and it gives you a chance to 'coach' their baserunning.
Similar to what trojan-skipper does, we incorporate a base-running station whenever we hit on the field. We do it as a separate group or simply use the group hitting. Hitting groups are working on situational hitting during their first few swings and the runners are working on the same thing. First round, (1)bunt over to 2B, (2)bunt over to 3B, (3)squeeze. All the while, we're coaching up the baserunners as well as the hitters. Second round, (1)hit and run, (2)move the runner to 3B, and (3)get him home. In this round, it is especially critical to pay attention to the runners....make sure they pick up the ball on the H&R, make sure they focus on our key to move to 3B (at you or to your left, you're moving up), make sure they get a good stalk and proper read at 3B to score. If you let them, they'll get lazy and move up and score on anything!
