My son's training center has a newfangled machine that measures bat velocity. My question is, what's a good benchmark for a hs player to aim for (in the way that 90mph is a benchmark for pitching velocity)?

Um, could you elaborate on that a little more? I've been googling batspeed/ bat velocity and although everyone seems to agree that faster is better and increasing your bat speed is a fine thing to do, there doesn't seem to be much info on just what a good number is, nor what the difference is between levels in the way that pitching is evaluated. I've heard 105-110 mph is a strong major-league performance but beyond that there doesn't seem to be much info available. It's great to measure velocity but a number by itself doesn't tell my son anything; he needs to know what a reasonable goal might be. Thanks.

Well, faster is better if you want to hit with more power, but your going to need bat control, as you do pitching control if you are a pitcher.

for it does not matter how fast you can swing or throw if you can't get the job at hand done!

A good target for HS is 90+. This is not very hard to do if you have good mechanics and strenth.

It is interesting to note that my bat speed has always been close to my throwing speed. I don't think there is a correlation but this has been so in my case! But I don't think I'll be seeing 105-110 mph. Big Grin
