Was watching a replay of a recent game between Presbyterian and Winthrop on what was a cold day. During the game, the home plate ump picked up a bat right after the batter from PC had made an out. He walked with the bat down the line and had a discussion with the coach.

The camera man on the third base side heard the discussion and informed Winthrop announcer Scott Neisler. Camera man relayed to Neisler that Presbyterian had been warming their bats in the dugout. Ump told them to quit doing it as that is illegal. My guess it that someone in the Winthrop dugout noticed something across the way and pointed it out to the ump. Or, maybe the ump or the catcher just picked up the bat and realized it shouldn't have felt warm to the touch. Never heard how they were warming the bats. Neisler mentioned that by warming the bats it could help prevent hand stings on a cold day.

Funny thing though, during Winthrop's next at bat, an end cap flew off of one their bats.

If you're asking what rule makes it illegal, it's FED 1-3-5 "No artificial or intentional means shall be used to control the temperature of the bat."

I don't know that it's covered in NCAA rules.

gunner34, you're right it is the balls that get harder in cold weather. However, this is really more of a softball thing where the poly cores expand in cold weather resulting in a much harder, higher compression ball. I can't see the compression of a baseball increasing much in cold weather. The rubber pill surrounded by threads just won't expand that much. A little harder, yes, but not in the same manner as a softball. A 375 compression softball wil take off like a rocket if it sitting out in sub 50 degree weather. If a 375 softball is stored in a cold garage and taken to a game in cold weather it will probably come in at close to 600 compression. Hard as a rock.

If baseball players BELIEVE that warming a bat makes it peform better in cold weather, then it will.
